Melissa Etheridge
Rocker, activist, and Academy award winner Melissa Etheridge learned in 2004 that she had breast cancer. Despite loosing all her hair from chemotherapy, Etheridge preformed live at the 2005 Grammy Awards, and, later that same year, released her song ?I Run For Life,? which has since become the unofficial anthem of many cancer fundraising runs throughout the county.
Robert De Niro
Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2003, this Hollywood icon announced he was in remission one year later. De Niro?s father, Robert De Niro Sr., lost his own battle with prostate cancer in 1993.
Sharron Osbourne
This TV host, music promoter, and wife of heavy metal musician Ozzy Obsourne learned that she had colon cancer in 2002 during the filming of the MTV reality show The Osbournes. Despite her illness, which later spread to her lymph nodes, she insisted the show must go on, and completed production of the second season of The Osbournes while undergoing intensive cancer treatment. Mrs. Osbourne went on to publicly campaign for cancer awareness, and continues to do so in her current job as co-host on The Talk.
Lance Armstrong
In 1996, this Tour de France winner announced that he had been was diagnosed with stage three testicular cancer which spread to other areas of his body, including his brain, stomach and lungs. After having his diseased testicle removed and undergoing intensive chemotherapy, he was declared cancer-free in 1997, the same year he launched the Lance Armstrong Foundation for cancer research and patient support. Following his bout with cancer, Armstrong went on to win the Tour de France six more times.
Christina Applegate
Television and movie actress Christina Applegate learned she had early stage breast cancer in 2008. Based on a positive test for the BRCA1 gene mutation which is linked to both breast and ovarian cancer, Applegate opted to have a double mastectomy at the age of 36. She has since went on to talk publicly about her experience with the disease, and the fact that she is now completely cancer-free.
Michael C. Hall
American actor and star of HBO?s hit series Dexter Michael C. Hall learned he had Hodgkin?s lymphoma in 2009. By the spring of 2010, Hall announced his disease was in remission, and he is now the spokesperson for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society?s fundraising campaign Light the Night.
Sheryl Crow
Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow learned she had breast cancer in 2006, which she had treated with surgery and radiation therapy. Crow, now free of cancer, is an advocate for breast cancer awareness and often lends her musical talent to fundraising efforts to fight the disease.
Rod Stewart
British-born rock legend Rod Stewart was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2000, and the surgery to remove the tumor threatened to silence his famous raspy voice. According to Stewart, following treatment, he needed to learn how to sing all over again. His brush with cancer has motivated Stewart to support charitable causes such as the City of Hope Foundation, a charity focuses on finding cures for childhood cancers.
Nancy Regan
During a routine mammogram in 1987 a lesion was detected in First Lady Nancy Regan?s left breast, leading to a diagnosis of breast cancer. Mrs. Regan choose to have a complete mastectomy, and used the publicity over her illness to encourage women throughout America to have mammograms. Over 20 years later, the First Lady remains cancer-free.
Tom Green
Canadian-born comedian and actor Tom Green used humor to deal with his diagnosis of testicular cancer in 2000. He used his role as a host on MTV to bring attention to the disease, including writing and producing the 2001 hour-long MTV special call The Tom Green Cancer Special which documented the treatment of his disease.
