From the Editor's Desk: Bringing the kids into the Android fold

Phil and Mia

I think I've switched my nearly 7-year-old daughter from iOS to Android.

She came willingly, which was a bit of a surprise, and truth be told I don't think she's knows the difference between one platform and another. She just knows that she's got a cooler-looking phone, and that I've told her it'll be much easier for me to get new music on there for here. (And cheaper for me, thanks to Google Play All Access.)

Still, for as cool as I think it is to see her using this new phone like she did her old inactive iPhone 3G, I can't help but wonder if I've turned into that parent, who doesn't give a damn that their kid suddenly has leaped forward a couple generations in personal tech hardware, all before her 7th birthday. That this new phone is all of a year old, and any one of our Android Central readers would be happy to have it. That I've just spoiled the hell out of my kid — and that she doesn't even really know it — is not lost me. (To say nothing of giving her one of 10 coveted device slots for my Google Play Music account.)

But the really scary thing is that unlike her old iPhone, I'm leaving this phone connected to the Internet. Again, that's mainly to make getting to Google Play Music All Access, and because occasionally there are some apps that love to crash on startup when they don't have an Internet connection. That's bad code, but whatever.

This is not unfettered access, though. I didn't just set my child loose on the Internet. This is a bit of an experiment as well.

WSJ: Google is Developing a New Nexus Q, Gaming Console and ...

google nexus q

According to a report out of the Wall Street Journal, Google has plans to introduce an Android gaming console of their own, along with new model of the Nexus Q?and a?smartwatch. Wait, that sort of sounds familiar? That?s right, because just before I/O, sources of ours said that Google was indeed working on a new version of the Nexus Q with a ?gaming focus.? We were also told at that time that a watch was in the works, possibly even already on the wrists of select Google employees, but that it wouldn?t arrive for some time. As you all know now, neither appeared at Google I/O, so their status became a question mark. Seeing both appear in a story at the WSJ is always a good sign, though.?

In the WSJ?s report, they don?t specifically mention that the new Nexus Q will be the Android gaming console, only that it will be released. Their report isn?t exactly clear, but it almost sounds as if they believe that there will be both a console and a Nexus Q as separate devices (which makes little sense). Our sources made it sound like they were one-and-the-same, but the details at the time were extremely fuzzy. This new report mentions that this version of the Q will be much more affordable. The original Q was priced at $299. Keep in mind that we saw a media player built by Google touch down at the FCC a month or so ago, so there is something to this idea that a Q would return even if Google continues to kill off the original.

As far as smartwatch goes, no exact details were released, only another report that Google is working on one.

The WSJ expects at least one of these devices to be released this fall.

Cheers David!

New player is critical to unleashing T cells against disease

June 23, 2013 ? A major study from researchers at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology provides new revelations about the intricate pathways involved in turning on T cells, the body's most important disease-fighting cells, and was published today in the scientific journal Nature.

The La Jolla Institute team is the first to prove that a certain type of protein, called septins, play a critical role in activating a calcium channel on the surface of the T cell. The channel is the portal through which calcium enters T cells from the blood stream, an action essential for the T cell's survival, activation, and ability to fight disease.

Patrick Hogan and Anjana Rao, Ph.D.s, are senior authors on the paper and Sonia Sharma and Ariel Quintana, Ph.D.s, are co-first authors. Drs. Sharma, Rao and Hogan are former researchers at Harvard Medical School with high-level genetics expertise who joined the La Jolla Institute in 2010. Dr. Quintana conducted advanced microscopy that was a major aspect of the study.

Dr. Hogan describes the discovery as another important step in understanding the overall functioning of T cells -- knowledge from which new, more precisely targeted drugs to treat diseases ranging from cancer to viral infections can emerge. "It's like working on an engine, you have to know what all the parts are doing to repair it," he says. "We want to understand the basic machinery inside a T cell. This will enable us to target the specific pressure points to turn up a T cell response against a tumor or virus or to turn it down in the case of autoimmune diseases."

The findings were published in a Nature paper entitled "An siRNA screen for NFAT activation identifies septins as coordinators of store-operated Ca2+ entry."

"We have found that the septin protein is a very strong regulator of the calcium response, which is essential for activating immune cells," says Dr. Sharma, who was recently appointed to a faculty position, and now leads her own independent laboratory at the La Jolla Institute, in addition to serving as scientific director of the newly established RNAi screening center.

Dr. Hogan says the discovery took the research team by surprise. "We knew septins existed in the cellular plasma (surface) membrane, but we didn't know they had anything to do with calcium signaling," he says. Septins are known to build scaffolding to provide structural support during cell division.

This finding builds on Dr. Rao and Dr. Hogan's groundbreaking discovery in 2006 showing that the protein ORAI1 forms the pore of the calcium channel. The channel's entryway had been one of the most sought after mysteries in biomedical science because it is the gateway to T cell functioning and, consequently, to better understanding how the body uses these cells to fight disease.

To the research team's surprise, the septins were forming a ring around the calcium channel. "We aren't sure why, but we theorize that the septins are rearranging the cellular membrane's structure to "corral" the key proteins STIM and ORAI1, and maybe other factors needed for the calcium channel to operate," says Dr. Hogan.

Dr. Sharma adds that, "essentially we believe the septins are choreographing the interaction of these two proteins that are important in instigating the immune response." Without the septins' involvement, T cell activation does not occur.

In the study, the researchers devised a simple visual readout of activity in a main pathway responsible for activation of T cells -- the same pathway that is targeted by the immunosuppressive drug cyclosporin A that is used clinically -- and looked for impairment of the activity when individual genes were, in effect, deleted. After sorting through the roughly 20,000 human genes, they turned up 887 gene "hits," says Dr. Hogan.

With further experiments, they should be able to classify those hits into genes that affect the calcium channel itself and genes that act later in the pathway. "We are hopeful that one or more of these genes can be used as a clinical target for new drugs to treat transplant rejection and immune diseases, some of the same indications now treated with cyclosporine A," adds Dr. Hogan. He believes that a medication aimed at an early step of calcium entry through the ORAI channel could be more effective and have fewer side effects than cyclosporin A, which targets a later step in the pathway and can cause complications such as kidney disease.

Google releases Internet-focused device to Canadian audience ...

There are a number of Canadians who use the Internet on a daily basis. Some business people might be online almost constantly to check the status?of international markets, while others might like to stay up on the latest celebrity gossip, checking various rumor mills multiple times a day.?

So it's not surprising that Google thought they were on to something when they created the Google Chromebook. This new device, which looks similar to a traditional laptop,?was developed with the Internet in mind. Because of the tendency for online action, the massive corporation?recently?decided to release it?to a Canadian audience.

What is the point of the Chromebook?
Some might ask what the point of the Chromebook is, if laptops, smartphones, tablets and other wireless devices all offer Internet access. The simple answer is that the technology offers the large display of a laptop but for a much cheaper price. According to CBC News, the computers start at a low $250.?

"The whole idea is basically to have a computing experience that's extremely simple, that's very stable, very secure and sort of just gets out of your way," Google product management director Caesar Sengupta told the news outlet.

The source said that software cannot be opened on the computer or programs downloaded, which can actually make things?easier, because not as many processes will run at once, which quickens access. Chromebooks?technically don't even have an operating system, Windows, Mac or otherwise, relying purely on the Chrome OS streamlined platform/web browser.?

What does this mean for the future?
According to CBC News, Google's trademark?Chromebooks are available now, but Asus, HP and Samsung all plan on releasing similar devices to Canadian audiences in the near future.?

Moreover, with the introduction of this product, there's a chance that Canada's which Internet usage will increase. This can greatly benefit internet service providers of all kinds, who would likely see a relative increase in revenue. After buying a Chromebook, shoppers should be aware that for their Wi-Fi options, they have choice between several of indie providers?that?offer prime access to the net.

Supreme Court strikes down Arizona law requiring proof of ...

NBC's Pete Williams reports on the 7-2 decision that knocked down Arizona's requirement for would-be voters to show proof of U.S. citizenship.

By Pete Williams and Erin McClam, NBC News

The Supreme Court on Monday struck down an Arizona law that requires people to submit proof of citizenship when they register to vote.

The vote was 7-2. Justice Antonin Scalia, writing for the majority, said that a 1993 federal law known as the Motor Voter Act takes precedence over the Arizona law because of its requirement that states ?accept and use? the federal voter registration form.

Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, two members of the court?s conservative wing, dissented.

Only a handful of states have similar laws, which the states say are meant to reduce voter fraud. Civil rights groups said the Arizona law was an effort to discourage voting by legal immigrants, and they worried that more states would have followed if the Supreme Court had upheld it.

Groups opposed to the Arizona law said that the court had blocked an attempt at voter suppression.

?Today?s decision sends a strong message that states cannot block their citizens from registering to vote by superimposing burdensome paperwork requirements on top of federal law,? said Nina Perales, vice president of litigation for the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund.

Citizenship is a requirement to vote in any federal election, and the federal registration form requires people to state, under penalty of perjury, that they are American citizens. States can use their own forms, but they must be equivalent to the federal form.

The Arizona law, known as Proposition 200 and adopted by Arizona voters in 2004, went further than the federal form by requiring applicants to provide proof of citizenship. Arizona has used the law to reject 30,000 voter applications, according to the Brennan Center for Justice.

Challengers to the law argued that it put an extra burden on naturalized citizens. Using a naturalization document as proof would require an applicant to register in person, as opposed to through the mail, because federal law prohibits copying the document.

A federal appeals court said that Arizona had gone too far and essentially rejected the federal form. Arizona said it was not a rejection of the federal form any more than asking for ID at an airport is a rejection of a plane ticket.

The Supreme Court ruling pointed out that Arizona still has an option: It can ask the federal government to include state-specific instructions on the federal form, and go to court if the government says no.

Three other states ? Alabama, Georgia and Kansas ? have laws almost identical to Arizona?s and joined it in urging the court to uphold the additional requirement for proof of citizenship.

At an oral argument in March, Thomas Horne, a lawyer for Arizona, told the justices that the state was within its rights to ask for additional information beyond the simple federal form.

?It?s extremely inadequate,? Horne said. ?It?s essentially an honor system. It does not do the job.?

?Well,? answered Justice Sonia Sotomayor, ?that?s what the federal system decided was enough.?

The court?s conservatives had appeared sympathetic to the Arizona side. Scalia said during the argument that federal law clearly empowers the states to take additional action to assess a potential voter?s eligibility.

?Under oath is not proof at all,? he said. ?It?s just a statement.?

Patricia Millett, a lawyer for groups opposed to the law, countered: ?Statements under oath in a criminal case are proof beyond a reasonable doubt? in criminal cases that result in execution.

?It?s a very serious oath,? she said.

Arizona is known for its tough stance on immigration. Last year, the Supreme Court struck down some key provisions of a state law meant to crack down on illegal immigration.

But it let stand the most controversial part ? a requirement that police making traffic stops check the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being in the country illegally.

XE.com - Aetna to exit California's individual insurance market

June 15 (Reuters) - Aetna Inc said on Saturday it has notified California's insurance regulator that it plans to stop selling health policies to individual consumers in the state at the end of 2013.

The company will continue to offer health insurance to employers and Medicare beneficiaries in California, as well as dental and life-insurance products, Aetna spokeswoman Anjie Coplin told Reuters. But people with individual health coverage with Aetna will have to find alternative coverage by year's end.

Aetna had informed California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones of its decision to exit the market, Coplin said, but it was still in the process of notifying members and brokers.

The move comes as California, the country's most populous state, prepares for the fall launch of a state health exchange authorized by President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act.

The exchange establishes new standards for health insurance products sold to individuals in the state, whether or not they are offered through the exchange.

Coplin did not immediately respond to an e-mail or voicemail asking why Aetna had decided to exit the individual health insurance market in California.

Aetna says its decision will affect only 49,000 of its 1.5 million policyholders in the state.

Iran votes for president, Khamenei slams U.S.

DUBAI (Reuters) - Millions of Iranians voted to choose a new president on Friday, urged by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to turn out in force to discredit suggestions by arch foe the United States that the election would be a sham. The 50 million eligible voters had a choice between six candidates to replace incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but none is seen as challenging the Islamic Republic's 34-year-old system of clerical rule.

U.S. considers no-fly zone after Syria crosses nerve gas 'red line'

ANKARA/BEIRUT (Reuters) - The United States is considering a no-fly zone in Syria, potentially its first direct intervention into the two-year-old civil war, Western diplomats said on Friday, after the White House said Syria had crossed a "red line" by using nerve gas. After months of deliberation, President Barack Obama's administration said on Thursday it would now arm rebels, having obtained proof the Syrian government used chemical weapons against fighters trying to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.

Erdogan makes conciliatory move to end Turkish protests

ISTANBUL/ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told protesters on Friday he would put redevelopment plans for an Istanbul park on hold until a court rules, striking a markedly more conciliatory tone after two weeks of fierce anti-government demonstrations. Financial markets rose on hopes that environmentalists who oppose the construction on Gezi Park would be satisfied, but it remained unclear whether other protesters with a wide variety of grievances against Erdogan would go home.

Obama to defend U.S. surveillance programs in G8 talks, White House says

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will defend U.S. phone and internet surveillance efforts during G8 talks next week, explaining to other leaders the importance of the tools in fighting terrorism, and safeguards in place to prevent abuse of the data, said Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security advisor, on Friday. Rhodes acknowledged that European countries have privacy and civil liberties concerns, but told reporters that the United States and the members of the G8 share security interests and work together to prevent attacks.

Anti-G8 activists rally in London banking district

LONDON (Reuters) - About 100 activists rallied in the shadow of London's Canary Wharf financial district on Friday, encircled by police, in a protest against capitalism before next week's G8 summit in the United Kingdom. Environmentalists, anti-poverty campaigners and women's rights groups waved banners reading "Capitalism = Crisis" and "Power to the People" in the Wharf, home to major banks such as Barclays and JP Morgan.

Analysis: Transforming Syria's war could take more than arming rebels

WASHINGTON/LONDON (Reuters) - - If the United States and allies genuinely want to change the course of the war in Syria, it may take considerably more than simply supplying the faltering opposition with weaponry. Western officials say they still believe the ultimate endgame - and possibly the exit of Bashar al-Assad - will be through a negotiated settlement.

Far from Iran election, former guerrillas lobby Washington

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - For decades, an Iranian dissident group has seemed to be on the wrong side of history. Suppressed by both the Shah of Iran and then the ayatollahs who deposed him in 1979, its supporters have faced prison, death and exile, and were shunned in the United States as members of a cult-like terrorist organization. The Mujahadin-e-Khalq (MEK) former guerrilla movement began to shake off its painful past last year when the State Department took it off the official U.S. list of terrorist organizations. The European Union made a similar decision in 2009 after a prolonged court battle.

Norway becomes first NATO country to draft women into military

OSLO (Reuters) - Norway's parliament voted overwhelmingly on Friday to conscript women into its armed forces, becoming the first European and first NATO country to make military service compulsory for both genders. "Rights and duties should be the same for all," said Labor lawmaker Laila Gustavsen, a supporter of the bill. "The armed forces need access to the best resources, regardless of gender, and right now mostly men are recruited."

Czech leader clings on after close aide charged with graft

PRAGUE (Reuters) - Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas was clinging to office on Friday after prosecutors accused his personal assistant of being at the centre of a corrupt web of political favors and secret surveillance. Police raids on government offices on Thursday signaled the most significant action against corruption in two decades in a country that has been mired in sleaze since its "Velvet Revolution" overthrew Communism in 1989.

Bulgaria names media magnate as security chief, raising furor

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgaria's parliament on Friday appointed a media magnate to oversee its state security service, a move that could rekindle popular discontent, threaten fragile stability after an early election and alienate European partners. Political analysts said the move was another example of Bulgaria subjecting state institutions to private interests and could worsen the international reputation of the European Union's poorest country for poor governance.

iOS 7 is the most skeuomorphic, most liberating version ever

iOS 7 is the most skeuomorphic, most liberating version ever shipped. So please shut up.

iOS 7 is turbulence. It's change. That scares some people, and makes others hungry. It divides sentiment and reaction, and creates as much fear and noise as it does thoughtful analysis and future thinking. That iOS 7 in its current form had to be realized in under 8 months, that it involved designers at Apple outside the usual interactive team, and that the beta came in so hot the iPad version wasn't even ready, adds to the turbulence, and to the uneasy feeling that we're still in the midst of change rather than comfortably through it.

We'll be digging into everything that's been publicly released about iOS 7 very soon, but I wanted to share some thoughts to two specific things right now:

iOS 7 is alive. It moves and "breathes" though dimensional layers.

First, this is the most skeumorphic version of iOS that's ever shipped. Jony Ive and teams might have removed almost -- though not entirely -- all of the textures like stitched leather and green felt, but they amped up the physicality considerably. iOS 7 is alive. It moves and "breathes" though dimensional layers. It turns and flips and folds and bounces and does all sorts of other delightful, skeuomorphic things (including multitasking with cards you can fling away).

Just like the original iOS used OpenGL and other game-like technologies to make the smoothest animations ever seen on a mobile interface -- and back Apple up into a mobile gaming empire -- iOS 7 includes physics and effects that take the gamification of user experience to a completely new level. It's a virtual collection of objects that can be directly manipulated -- played with -- by a person's finger, by acceleration and rotation, or by other elements of the system. It's what Apple calls "depth. It's brilliant -- if unfinished -- and very much the beginnings of that "something next".

Second, the iOS 7 design language is liberating. Apple calls it "deference" and intends it to get out the way. That lets content shine, but it also lets designers shine. Previous versions of iOS layered bars -- status and menu and tab and more -- onto designs. It constrained and covered. iOS 7 lifts that off. It pulls away and overlays.

Initially, like with any new design language, we'll get a lot of apps that try to look like Apple's -- the UIKit or Metro or built-for-BB10 apps. That'll quickly give way to designers who take all the space and frameworks and run with them, and make things, beautiful and hideous things, that are new and exciting and not like anything we've seen before.

iOS is now an object inside and out, one that exists to drive focus to the content, media or app or both, but still and always delight to the user.

iOS 7 has only just gone into its first very early beta. There's a lot that can still be fixed and polished and hopefully will. The new grid is great, but things like the Safari icon fill up too much of it (imagine an Apple t-shirt with a logo on it 3-feet wide). As much as they've nailed the depth and deference, they need to follow through on the clarity. It needs a couple more rounds of interactive polish. That, however, like a thousand other details can and hopefully will be brushed in during the beta process. Still, the broad strokes are there.

iOS is now an object inside and out, one that exists to drive focus to the content, media or app, or both, but still and always delight to the user. It's just taken it all to a much more visceral level. It's scary, but it's the future.

Official Cloud Print app hits Google Play, streamlines your wireless printing needs

DNP Google Cloud Print for Android

The official Cloud Print app has finally been released on Google Play, possibly rendering the third-party apps you've relied on over the years superfluous. Using the standalone software will likely be a familiar affair if you've ever printed via mobile devices in the past. Just choose a file saved on your phone, tablet or the cloud, and it'll make its merry way to your Cloud Print-ready device. Note that your photo or document still has to be funneled through your computer if you use a classic, wired printer. Head over to Google Play via the source link below to give Cloud Print a spin.

Man linked to hacker group agrees to plead guilty

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? An Ohio man linked to the hacker collective Anonymous plans to plead guilty to charges that he breached police-agency websites, under an agreement with the federal government that calls for prison time and nearly $230,000 in restitution.

Court documents filed April 15 show 22-year-old John Anthony Borell III agreed to plead guilty to five charges related to the hacking of law enforcement websites in Utah, California, New York and Missouri.

The Toledo, Ohio, man would receive three years in prison and have to pay restitution under the agreement, which still needs court approval.

Borell is scheduled to appear before a judge at an Aug. 21 hearing for approval of the plea deal, and sentencing.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Utah declined to comment on the agreement. Messages left with Borell's attorney Jamie Zenger were not immediately returned Tuesday.

As part of the deal, Borell would admit to hacking into the websites for Salt Lake City police; the Utah Chiefs of Police Association; police in Syracuse, N.Y.; the city of Springfield, Mo.; and the Los Angeles County Canine Police Association. He also would admit to hacking into a local community website in Illinois called "Pendleton Underground."

The attacks all occurred between September 2011 and February 2012.

Borell was arrested in March of that year after he took credit for taking down the websites on his Twitter account.

"Regarding all of these hacks, I knew that what I was doing was illegal," Borell states in court records. "I admit that I intentionally caused damage to protected computers by my conduct."

Borell had been detained in a halfway house but was granted a court-approved release to live with his girlfriend in Toledo until his sentencing in August.

FBI officials have said the hacking gained access to citizen complaints about drugs and other crimes, including phone numbers, addresses and other personal data of informants. It also exposed some personal information on police officers.

The Utah police chiefs' website was compromised on Jan. 19, 2012, and was back online after a few days. But the Salt Lake City police site wasn't relaunched until four months after it went down on Jan. 31. Officials said the city spent $33,000 to repair damage to their website and beef up security.

The attacks on the servers came around the same time that a spate of Internet attacks attributed to Anonymous occurred around the country.

FBI investigators traced Borell through his Internet address associated with the Twitter account.

Anonymous is a group of loosely organized Internet enthusiasts, pranksters and activists whose targets have included financial institutions such as Visa and MasterCard, the Church of Scientology and law enforcement agencies.

Rhapsody announces Napster launch in 14 countries across Europe

As part of its Napster (and Napster International) acquisition from a while back, Rhapsody promised it would spread the music service across more places worldwide, with one of the many focuses being to have a stronger presence in Europe. Well, staying true to its word, Rhapsody's announcing today that it's bringing the ripened Napster to more countries in The Old Continent, such as France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and more. For those Euro folks interested, the Napster membership is set to cost €9.95 per month, which includes, among other things, offline features and unlimited streaming of over 20 million tunes on both desktop and mobile apps. But, hey, if you'd rather see how it stacks up against similar services first, then maybe you oughta take up Rhapsody on its 30-day free trial offer at the source link below.

Psst... you'll find the full list of new countries where Napster's now available in the PR past the jump.

MetroPCS to start using T-Mobile's network and GSM handsets June 12th

MetroPCS to start using T-Mobile's network and GSM handsets June 12th

And so it begins. With T-Mobile recently closing the deal to acquire MetroPCS, it was only a matter of time before we'd see more commingling. PhoneArena's uncovered yesterday that MetroPCS is about start using T-Mobile's network and GSM handsets. Two phones which are currently available on T-Mobile -- the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Exhibit (a Galaxy S III mini clone) and the LG Optimus L9 -- are making their way to MetroPCS, complete with GSM / EDGE and AWS-capable UMTS / HSPA+ radios (no LTE). Pricing for these devices is still unknown, but the company's expected to begin selling plans on T-Mobile's network as soon a June 12th. In addition, a service called BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) will allow customers to bring their own GSM handsets to MetroPCS (excluding BlackBerry models). It's unclear if eligible devices have to be unlocked and / or T-Mobile branded but we'll find out soon enough. So there you have it -- the start of a perfect honeymoon.

(AP) ? Kei Nishikori became the first Japanese man in 75 years to reach the French Open's fourth round, doing so with a victory where his opponent was docked a point for being coached.

The 13th-seeded Nishikori beat No. 24 Benoit Paire of France 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-1 Saturday.

Paire had a set point while leading 5-4 in the second and Nishikori serving at 30-40. But Paire was given a point penalty by chair umpire Enric Molina for coaching, which is not allowed at Grand Slam tournaments.

Paire wound up winning that set, anway, but was broken in the last game of the third when he missed a drop shot.

Japan's Fumiteru Nakano lost in the fourth round in Paris in 1938.
