Aerial drone designers have been pushing hard to get devices that can stay airborne for days. After all, what's the point of having an observer that routinely lets its guard down? Lockheed Martin must have this question forever etched in its collective mind, as it just completed tests of a modified Stalker drone that was continually charged by laser power beamed from a ground-based source. The LaserMotive-built test was admittedly conducted in a wind tunnel, not a wind-swept battlefield, but it kept the drone aloft for more than 48 hours and was so efficient that it might even have gone indefinitely, if it weren't for staff intentionally bringing the trial to a halt. The true test is coming next, when Lockheed Martin and LaserMotive fly the drone on laser power outdoors. Should the Stalker sail the friendly skies for long enough, it could help usher in an era of UAVs that can spot intruders at all hours -- a little too close to the aircraft's name for comfort, perhaps, but potentially vital for Special Operations troops that might not have to put themselves in danger. Oklahoma City University the Apparent Winner in Bid for Downtown Landmark

Oklahoma City University appears to be the winner in the rivalry with Oklahoma City Public Schools to buy downtown?s former Central High School.
That rivalry was detailed in an exclusive story in The Oklahoman last week in which the university first publically disclosed its effort to buy the landmark from American Farmers & Ranchers to turn into a new home for the OCU Law School.
Oklahoma City Public Schools superintendent, meanwhile, was banking on buying the building to turn into new administrative offices for the district. The school system had upped its bid to at least $8.5 million in funding disclosed to the public; the asking price for the property was $11.5 million.
Ron Norick, trustees chairman at OCU, confirmed the letter of intent was signed by both the university and the insurance company late Friday afternoon. A move won?t likely take place for at least another year.
?They want to stay in the building between one and two years,? Norick told The Oklahoman. ?They?ll stay in, and during that time, we?ll be doing some space planning, architectural work, and get to know how we?ll finish it out inside.?
Norick added American Farmers & Ranchers intends to stay in Oklahoma City and will be looking for a new home. The company currently has more than two floors at the school not being used.
Law School Dean Valerie Couch, meanwhile, said it?s possible renovations of the un-used floors could begin while American Farmers & Ranchers looks for new space.
?This building fits our needs so well ? at least it appears to,? Couch said this afternoon. ?We will have a due diligence period to study it to make sure it will fit all of our classrooms and clinics. Our preliminary look indicates that certainly will be the case.?

This afternoon, American Farmers and Ranchers Mutual Ins. Co. accepted the Letter of Intent we submitted to them for purchase of the AFR building.? Under the terms of the LOI, we will deliver a purchase agreement to them within two weeks reflecting the price agreed upon in the LOI.? Upon completion and execution of the Purchase Agreement, we will enter a 60-day due diligence period to determine acceptability of the property. ??So there?s a lot of heavy lifting ahead in the next few weeks.
I wanted to share this good news with you today, and I will give you more details as the process develops.? This secures for us an opportunity to determine the building?s feasibility and acceptability of condition and also gives us time to address the financial structure of the transaction with the University?s Board of Trustees and lenders who must ultimately approve any purchase of this nature.
I know this is short notice but I would like to set a meeting of our board for Friday July 27 beginning at noon.? I will send you more information about the place and logistics as well as conference call instructions for those who would like to participate by phone.

Sipping Pepsi costs Ronaldinho $1.556 million
A can of Pepsi? That will be $1.55 million, please. (May need to use take-a-penny tray). Of course this price is for Ronaldinho only, as the buck-toothed soccer star recently made perhaps one of the most expensive gaffes in pro sports history. While speaking at a press conference for his new team, Atletico Mineiro, the Brazilian star sipped a can of Pepsi that was on the table ? and that was a deal-breaker for Coca-Cola, to which he is tied with a ?500,000-a-year sponsorship deal. Unpaid earnings on the contract, which was to run through 2014? About ?1 million, or $1.556 million.

And in the photo you see to the right, a can of Pepsi can be seen in the bottom left-hand corner. Apparently Ronaldinho didn?t drink that one. Pepsi is one of Atletico Mineiro?s sponsors.

?The fact that the player has appeared with a can of Pepsi was the straw that broke the camel?s back,? Coca Cola marketing chief Marcelo Pontes told the paper. ?The sponsorship had become embarrassing.?

Queen's University researchers contribute to breakthrough in solar technology
Two Queen's researchers have contributed to a significant breakthrough in solar technology. Their research has led to a new solar photovoltaic thermal (PVT) system that generates both electricity and heat.
Solar PVTs are normally made with crystal silicon cells which generate electricity, but little heat. Stephen Harrison and Joshua Pearce (Mechanical and Materials Engineering) designed and tested amorphous silicon cells in a PVT system. Their research shows increased heat generation because of higher operating temperatures and 10 per cent more solar electric output.
"These studies open up an entirely new application of amorphous silicon and make a highly-economic PVT possible," says Dr. Pearce. "We need both solar electricity and solar heating in Canada but we are running into 'roof real estate' issues. Now people can have both their solar electricity and solar heating combined in a nice tidy package."
The amorphous silicon has several advantages over crystal silicon. It requires less material, costs less to manufacture and offers a higher return on investment. The research also shows amorphous silicon solar cells can be made into thicker cells as long as they are operated at higher temperatures in the PVT system.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Pablo Sandoval hit a bases-loaded triple off Justin Verlander during a five-run first inning, and the National League romped to an 8-0 lead over the American League through six innings in the All-Star game Tuesday night.
Melky Cabrera, Sandoval's teammate in San Francisco, added a two-run homer in the fourth. Rafael Furcal and Ryan Braun each tripled to help the NL set a record for the most in a Midsummer Classic.
Adding to a big night for the Giants, NL starter Matt Cain tossed two sharp innings.
Braun also had an RBI double off Verlander during the biggest first inning since 2006, when the AL scored six times off Roger Clemens before his hometown fans in Houston.
"It's exciting for me to hit a triple with the bases loaded in the All-Star game," said Sandoval, who has only 12 triples in his career. "It's a good taste for me."
The start couldn't have tasted much better for the National League, which was trying to earn home-field advantage in the World Series for the third straight year.
The reward sure came in handy last season, when the Cardinals rallied to win the final two games against the Texas Rangers at Busch Stadium to capture their 11th championship. The team with home-field advantage has won three straight World Series, and six of the last nine.
Tony La Russa certainly enjoyed watching his guys circle the bases Tuesday night.
The former Cardinals manager retired after last year's World Series, but was asked to call the shots for the NL team one more time. He had vowed all week to manage the game to win.
Verlander was coming off two complete games in his last three starts, and had only allowed seven runs in the first inning all season. But the reigning AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner ran into trouble almost from the start, giving up a one-out single to Cabrera and Braun's RBI double.
The Detroit Tigers' ace recovered to strike out Joey Votto, but walked Carlos Beltran and Buster Posey ? the latter on four pitches. Sandoval came to the plate with the bases loaded and hammered a curve off the right-field wall, driving in three runs with his first triple of 2012.
Dan Uggla followed with an RBI single to deep shortstop to give the NL a 5-0 lead.
Verlander was replaced by Joe Nathan in the second inning, an embarrassing way to leave his fifth All-Star game. Verlander had allowed five earned runs in a start only once all season, and hadn't given up five runs in any inning since April 11, 2010, against the Indians.
"Obviously you don't want to go out like that," Verlander said. "That's why I don't try to throw 100 (mph) in the first inning, but this is for the fans. It usually doesn't work out too well for me."
Cain had no such problems.
The three-time All-Star worked around a single by Derek Jeter in the first inning, and then set the AL down in order in the second. Cain gave way to Gio Gonzalez in the third inning, making it a successful debut for the Giants' ace in the annual summer showcase.
Cain was hurt in 2009 and didn't enter the game last season.
"For those guys to go out there and score five runs in the first inning was definitely a little more relaxing for me," Cain said, "but I still had to stay focused."
Nationals rookie Bryce Harper, the subject of so much attention this season, lost his focus in the fifth inning. Wearing brilliant golden spikes, Harper drew a walk from Jered Weaver and then advanced to second, but got hung up heading to third base and was tagged out.
Harper remained in the game in left field, and promptly lost a fly ball hit by Mike Napoli in the orange-tinted sky, drawing a chorus of laughs from the overflowing crowd celebrating its third All-Star game, and the first played in Kansas City since 1973.
The fans have certainly caught the nation's attention this week, both for the way they've supported the All-Star game and the way they lustily booed Yankees slugger Robinson Cano during the Home Run Derby. The captain of the AL team had promised to choose a Royals player to participate, but wound up leaving Billy Butler ? their lone All-Star ? off his four-man squad.
Cano was booed lustily during player introductions, but perhaps realizing Cano and Butler are on the same team, the Yankees' second baseman was mostly cheered when he singled in the fourth.
The cheers swelled to a roar in the sixth inning, when Chipper Jones of the Braves singled as a pinch hitter on a slow grounder. Perhaps happy to help Jones take a bow, Texas second baseman Ian Kinsler gave less than an all-out effort as the ball trickled into right field.
Jones has announced he will retire after this season, and had never before played at Kauffman Stadium. He tipped his batting helmet to acknowledge the crowd.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? With Lance Armstrong digging in for a legal fight, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency issued lifetime sports bans Tuesday to three former staff members and consultants on the cyclist's winning Tour de France teams for drug violations.
Luis Garcia del Moral was a team doctor; Michele Ferrari was a consulting doctor; and Jose "Pepe" Marti (team trainer) worked for Armstrong's U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel squads. All had been accused by USADA of participating in a vast doping conspiracy on those teams during part or all of Armstrong's seven Tour victories from 1999-2005.
Armstrong also has been charged and has declared his innocence.
Several hours after USADA announced its sanctions against the others, Armstrong's attorneys refiled a lawsuit asking a federal judge in Austin to prevent the case against from going forward.
U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks had thrown out Armstrong's initial 80-page complaint Monday, but invited him to submit a new one that was shorter, more to the point and less about his career and personal battles with anti-doping officials.
Armstrong's attorneys refiled a 25-page suit arguing that USADA violates athletes' constitutional rights, that the agency doesn't have the jurisdiction to bring the charges and that it may have violated federal law in its investigation.
Armstrong wants the court to rule by Saturday, his deadline to either accept USADA's charges and sanctions or send his case to arbitration.
An Armstrong spokesman declined immediate comment on the USADA bans issued Tuesday.
Under USADA rules, Moral, Marti and Ferrari had until Monday to challenge the allegations against them in arbitration or ask for a five-day extension. If they did not respond, USADA could impose sanctions.
Although none lives in the United States, USADA says the ban blocks them from participating in any sport that falls under the World Anti-Doping Agency code.
"The respondents chose not to waste resources by moving forward with the arbitration process, which would only reveal what they already know to be the truth of their doping activity," said Travis Tygart, chief executive of USADA.
There's been no indication from USADA that any of the three men ? who each received the agency's maximum punishment ? is cooperating with investigators.
Armstrong was granted his extension while he files his court case. Also charged and granted an extension was Armstrong's former team manager, Johan Bruyneel.
Another team doctor, Pedro Celaya, also has been charged and faced the same Monday deadline. A USADA spokeswoman declined to say if Celaya asked for an extension or for his case to go to arbitration.
USADA filed the charges against Armstrong and the others in June, laying out what it calls a vast doping conspiracy on Armstrong's teams when he was winning the Tour de France from 1999-2005.
Moral, who lives in Spain, was the team physician from 1999-2003. According to USADA, he helped riders use banned blood transfusion techniques to help boost endurance. He also helped them use banned performance-enhancing drugs including the blood-booster EPO and steroids.
Moral could not immediately be reached for comment by telephone or email.
Ferrari, who lives in Italy, was a consulting doctor for Armstrong and the U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel teams from 1999-2006, according to USADA. USADA said Ferrari developed a special mixture of testosterone and olive oil to be placed under the tongue to help riders recover from races and training. He also helped advised riders how to use EPO and avoid detection.
Ferrari's lawyer could not be immediately reached for comment and there was no answer at Ferrari's home. The doctor already was banned for life by the Italian cycling federation in 2002.
Marti, of Spain, who worked for the U.S. Postal Service, Discovery from 1999-2007 and then Astana, helped deliver performance-enhancing drugs to riders in Europe and helped with injections, USADA said.
"Permanently banning these individuals from sport is a powerful statement that protects the current and next generation of athletes from their influence, and preserves the integrity of future competition," Tygart said.

Two killed as tornado hits South Africa

Getty ImagesNow that arbitrator Stephen Burbank has ruled that franchise tags stack when applied to the same player by different teams, the next big question under Article 10 of the labor deal is whether a player can be limited by the franchise tag more than three times in his career.
The CBA says nothing about the use of a franchise tag on a given player more than three times.? That could invite an argument by the NFLPA and any given player who hopes to avoid a fourth career application of the franchise tag that it?s simply not possible.
The NFL would argue that, because the CBA contains no prohibition on the use of the franchise tag a fourth time, it can be used a fourth time, and beyond.? The NFLPA would argue that, because the CBA does not expressly contemplate the use of the franchise tag a fourth time, it can?t be applied to any player more than three times.
Given Tuesday?s ruling, which applied a narrow view of the CBA that benefits players and makes use of the franchise tag more cumbersome for teams, it wouldn?t be a surprise for arbitrator Stephen Burbank to rule that no player may be tagged more than three times.
It also wouldn?t be a surprise if that?s the next issue dropped on Burbank?s docket.
Now that Saints quarterback Drew Brees has obtained a ruling on the hypothetical use of the franchise tag in 2013, why not raise the stakes and seek a ruling that, after 2013, the Saints couldn?t use the tag on Brees again?
At least in this context, the dice seem to be hot for the union.? Brees and the NFLPA should give them another roll.
Then again, the NFLPA already has secured a major victory.? If the tag can be used a fourth time, the player would be entitled to yet another 44-percent raise.? For Brees, that translates to a one-year salary and cap number of $33.94 million in 2014.? There?s no way any team could be competitive with that much cap space tied up in one player, which means there?s no way the Saints would use the franchise tag on Brees for the fourth time in his career.

Fruit flies are pretty small. But they laugh at a species of fly recently discovered in Thailand. Dubbed Euryplatea nanaknihali, this member of the phorid fly family is less than half a millimeter long?a fifth the size of a fruit fly.
But before you ooh and aah over the ?cute widdle bug,? bear in mind that it probably makes its living cutting off the heads of tiny ants. Many phorid species lay their eggs in living ants. The newly hatched larvae move to the ants? heads, feed on them and eventually decapitate them.
But some ants were considered immune to the parasitic threat because they were too small for any known fly species to fit into their heads. With the discovery of the littlest phorid fly, however, that size advantage?or rather, lack-of-size advantage?vanishes.?
It?s not definite yet, but the new little fly probably is an ant eater: its pointy abdomen is well adapted to pierce an ant?s body for egg-laying purposes. How adorable is that?
