Here is a shocking statistic: Over the past three years, there have been at least 20 teen dating domestic abuse murders in California, according to SafeAtSchools.org. Oftentimes, domestic violence is common among teens in their first relationships who seek love and affection. Young victims might think that abuse exists in all relationships.
California's Operation for HOPE Foundation wants teens and young adults to know that love and trust should never equal fear. The nonprofit said that everyone from teachers to parents to neighbors can play a role in preventing teen dating violence. The number one thing is to set an example of how a loving relationship should be, the nonprofit said.
Unfortunately, domestic violence is a very real problem in many households. Domestic violence also does not discriminate. People of any race, gender or age can become victims. If you are currently facing abuse, know that you do have options. It is possible to seek a brighter future and stand up for yourself.
Filing for a restraining order or an order for protection is one way to do this. A restraining order can protect you and/or your children by requiring that the abuser stay a certain distance away and abstain from all contact via phone or Internet. If the abuser violates the restraining order, the police can be called and the abuser may be arrested and criminally charged.
There are many different forms of domestic abuse, including physical abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse, stalking and threats. All of these forms of abuse are considered grounds for a restraining order in California. Talk to an attorney or victims' advocate today if you or someone you care about is facing domestic abuse.
