The Jersey City Independent? Arts Blog News ? Painting by Local ...

A painting by Downtown Jersey City artist Ana Benaroya was allegedly stolen while on display in her solo show at Satis Bistro earlier this month.

Benaroya says that one of her works, the yellow mask painting in a diptych which had been hanging on the Washington Street restaurant?s walls for two months (seen at right), was nowhere to be found when she came to pick up her work on Dec. 4. The work is approximately 8 by 10 inches on two-inch-deep canvas stretchers. It was painted with acrylic paint, spray paint, and india ink.

The 26-year-old says she had a good working relationship with co-owner Michael Garcia and the restaurant in general, having worked with them twice before. She drew the giant chalkboard that hangs in the restaurant and painted the planters outside, she says. She was shocked to find out that someone was able to snatch the painting from where it hung in the hallway connecting the eatery?s first and second floor.

Garcia was also upset to find out about the incident, but didn?t do enough, Benaroya says. ?He told me that he would not go through the restaurant?s video tapes and also would not compensate me at all. While no amount of money would make me feel better ? I feel like he should have taken some responsibility in protecting my work.?

Garcia counters that Benaroya ?knew going in? that he was not responsible for her work and adds that he simply wanted to help her show her work. Any sales from her show, he says, would?ve gone completely to her with Satis taking no commission. ?I feel terribly about it, but it?s not my fault, it?s just a shame. I can understand her feeling angry and her disappointment. I feel the same way but in this situation, I can?t be held responsible for this.

Benaroya took the rest of her work home from Satis on Dec. 4 and filed a police report Dec. 8, she says. Jersey City police did not respond in time for publication.

The artist says she is extremely saddened, especially since the painting was completed in 2007 and had sentimental value for her.

?Both of these paintings (had a sentimental meaning for me)?and the other is basically ruined since now its other half is missing,? she says. ?These paintings came from when I first started painting seriously and I also painted them while I was living in a house I no longer live in. It may sound silly, but they connected me with that place and it feels terrible to have part of that stolen away from me.?

After the incident, Garcia says things are changing around Satis. While they currently have works on display by local artist Mark Finne, Garcia plans to buy some art of his own to decorate the eatery to avoid future issues.
