The U.S.-led military coalition in Afghanistan incorrectly reported a decline in Taliban attacks last year, and officials said Tuesday that there was actually no change in the number of attacks on international troops from 2011 to 2012. In mid-December, Panetta said "violence is down," in 2012, and that Afghan forces "have gotten much better at providing security" in areas where they have taken the lead role. (AP) ? The American-led military coalition in Afghanistan backed off Tuesday from its claim that Taliban attacks dropped off in 2012, tacitly acknowledging a hole in its widely repeated argument that violence is easing and that the insurgency is in steep decline.

In response to Associated Press inquiries about its latest series of statistics on security in Afghanistan, the coalition command in Kabul said it had erred in reporting a 7 percent decline in attacks. In fact there was no decline at all, officials said.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who is among the senior officials who had publicly repeated the assertion of an encouraging drop-off in Taliban attacks last year, was disturbed to learn of the error, said his spokesman, George Little.

"This particular set of metrics doesn't tell the full story of progress against the Taliban, of course, but it's unhelpful to have inaccurate information in our systems," Little said.

A coalition spokesman, Jamie Graybeal, attributed the miscounting to clerical errors and said the problem does not change officials' basic assessment of the war, which they say is on a positive track as American and allied forces withdraw.

The 7 percent figure had been included in a report posted on the website of the coalition, the International Security Assistance Force, on Jan. 22 as part of its monthly update on trends in security and violence. It was removed from the website recently without explanation. After the AP asked last week about the missing report, coalition officials said they were correcting the data and would re-publish the report. As of Tuesday afternoon it had not reappeared.

It was not clear whether or how the Pentagon might correct a separate report ? its semi-annual report to Congress on security progress in Afghanistan, which used some of the same Taliban-attack statistics. The report was sent to Congress in December.

"We'll look at any adjustments that need to be made" to that report, Little said.

U.S. and allied officials have often cited declining violence as a sign that the Taliban have been degraded and that Afghan forces are in position to take the lead security role across the country when the last U.S. combat troops leave Dec. 31, 2014.

In mid-December, Panetta said "violence is down" for 2012 and Afghan forces "have gotten much better at providing security" in areas where they have taken the lead. He said the Taliban could be expected to continue to attack, "but overall they are losing."

Little said Panetta was briefed only "very recently" on the erroneous data.

U.S. and alliance officials try to measure progress against the Taliban from a variety of angles. Those include, for example, indications that the Taliban have lost much of their influence in population centers.

"The fact that 80 percent of the violence has been taking place in areas where less than 20 percent of the Afghan population lives remains unchanged," Little said.

The Taliban have lost a good deal of territory since a 2010 surge of U.S. forces in the southern provinces of Helmand and Kandahar, and they failed to recover it during the past two fighting seasons. Even so, they are resilient, and they are expected to severely test Afghan forces as the U.S. and its coalition partners step further into the background this year and complete their combat mission next year.

Many people, including coalition officials, have cautioned against the heavy reliance on statistics in assessing war progress. Yet the figures often are highlighted when they fit the narrative being promoted by leaders in Washington and other allied capitals.

"It is disturbing that, after 10 years of war, no reliable count of trends in violence exist even in terms of deaths, the most visible form of violence and one that is only a small portion of the actual causes and patterns of violence in the war," Anthony Cordesman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies wrote in February 2012.

Graybeal did not fully explain erroneous reporting of 2012 Taliban attacks by the International Security Assistance Force. It was not clear, for example, at what point the data errors began or who discovered them.

"During a quality control check, ISAF recently became aware that some data was incorrectly entered into the database that is used for tracking security-related incidents across Afghanistan," Graybeal said earlier.

He said an audit determined that portions of the data from unilateral Afghan military operations were "not properly reflected" in the trends ISAF had reported in its monthly updates.

"After including this unilateral ANSF (Afghan National Security Force) data into our database, we have determined that there was no change in the total number of EIAs (enemy initiated attacks) from 2011 to 2012," Graybeal said.

"This was a record-keeping error that we recognized and have now corrected," he added.

While ISAF routinely reports trends in Taliban attacks, it does not reveal exact numbers of attacks. Judging from its illustrative charts, however, it appears that there were more than 28,000 Taliban "enemy initiated" attacks in 2011.

The coalition defines enemy initiated attacks as those by small arms, mortars, rockets and improvised explosive devices, or IEDs. But it does not include IEDs that are found and cleared before they explode.

Trends in Taliban attacks are one yardstick used by ISAF to measure war progress. Others include the state of security in populated areas, the number of coalition and Afghan casualties, the level of economic activity, the degree to which civilians can move about freely and the performance of Afghan security forces.

Graybeal said that even though the number of 2012 Taliban attacks was unchanged from 2011, "our assessment of the fundamentals of campaign progress has not changed. The enemy is increasingly separated from the population, and the ANSF are currently in the lead for the vast majority of partnered operations."

Newt pheromones: They drive the ladies crazy

Franky Bossuyt

The male alpine Ichthyosaura alpestris newt knows that it isn't the tail waving that attracts the ladies, but the pheromones that he uses.

By Joseph Castro
LiveScience

It may be time to crown male newts as the female-arousing kings ? the amphibians release powerful pheromones that put females in the mood to mate with practically any adult around, even other females from different newt species, new research shows.

"The females react as if they're under the influence of drugs," said lead researcher Franky Bossuyt, a biologist at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Free University of Brussels) in Belgium. "We were convinced that if we put in a plastic toy moving at the right speed, they would follow it."

Newts typically live on land as adults and mate exclusively in water. During the breeding season, males adopt intense color patterns and grow skin extensions on their legs, tail and crest. These changes are thought to make males more attractive to females.

When two newts meet, the male releases pheromones and waves his tail, sending the chemical signals to the female. They then play out a mating dance akin to a short game of tag, with the female following after the male. To let him know she's ready to get down to business, the female touches the male's tail with her nose, prompting him to deposit his spermatophore ? a jellylike mass containing sperm??onto a substrate in the water, such as a leaf. Finally, he leads the female over the sperm packet, which sticks to her cloaca (the orifice leading to intestinal, reproductive and urinary tracts), resulting in insemination.

For years, scientists thought males waved their tails to disperse "attractant pheromones," which broadcast the male's presence and bring newt pairs together. But there's a problem with this idea: The newts have already introduced themselves before the male waves his tail. "The females are not attracted to the males by the tail-waving, at least with the newts I've seen," Bossuyt said.

Instead, the researchers thought, the tail fanning might disperse "courtship pheromones" that alter the female's behavior to stimulate mating.

Newt mating game
To find out, researchers placed male-female pairs of alpine newts (Ichthyosaura alpestris) and palmate newts (Lissotriton helveticus) into water-filled plastic containers for receptivity tests. The newts passed the test and were ready for the next phase if they completed the courtship ritual (females weren't allowed to complete the insemination).

The team then put two-female pairs into pheromone-infused courtship?water; some pairs consisted of two alpine newts, other pairs had one female of each species. If the water contained pheromones from a male of her species, the female would desperately try to court the other female. In some cases, two female alpine newts tried to follow each other, resulting in the pair circling one another. In some two-species trials, one female chased after another, even as the unreceptive partner tried to escape the container. [See video of the sex-crazed newts]

But the amphibians didn't remain patient forever. Not receiving the spermatophore she expected, the courting female eventually started waving her tail at her partner, possibly sending out pheromones.

Frustrated females
"Female tale-waving?is a kind of frustration behavior," Bossuyt explained, adding that females also tail-waved in receptivity tests to get males to continue courtship after researchers removed the spermatophores. In natural settings, this behavior probably happens only in uncommon situations, such as when a male is too tired for courtship. "So female tail-waving likely happens in nature, but you will not easily observe it," he said.

The results suggest the pheromones don't just announce the male's arrival, given how they induced such an overpowering mating reaction in the females. The researchers think males may have evolved such potent pheromones out of necessity, since newts often breed in turbid water with other newt species, making it difficult to mate based on vision alone.

It seems a male newt's flashy appearance matters little to females: It's all about his smell.

The research was detailed online this month in the journal PLOS ONE.

California search for victims of "speed freak" killers grows cold

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Investigators searching for possible additional victims of California's "speed freak" serial killings of the 1980s and '90s have run out of places to look, after the latest excavation of a suspected burial site came up empty, the FBI said.

No human remains were found in the abandoned, 100-foot-deep well dug out by hand during a six-week operation on a patch of pasture land near the San Joaquin County town of Linden, east of San Francisco, the FBI said on Thursday.

The well shaft, mostly filled with rock-hard soil, was about 200 yards (meters) from a spot identified last summer by condemned killer Wesley Shermantine as a probable burial site for some of those killed by him and his now-deceased accomplice, Loren Herzog.

"We are disappointed that our efforts did not yield remains, offering closure to families who suspect that Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog were involved in the disappearance of their loved ones," FBI Special Agent Herb Brown said.

The FBI said Shermantine was asked through his attorney last week for additional leads but refused to talk. Brown said he would renew search efforts if Shermantine offered specific new information about locations and identities of remains.

For now, however, Shermantine "refuses to meet with us, stymieing future investigation and excavation," Brown said.

Shermantine and Herzog have long been suspected in as many as 22 deaths, mostly of young women and girls who vanished decades ago.

Ultimately convicted in connection with six killings, they were dubbed the speed freak killers for the methamphetamine-fueled violence they unleashed in and around California's farm-rich San Joaquin Valley.

Shermantine suggested in letters to reporters and others last year that the pair may have been responsible for more than 70 killings, a claim which if true would rank the duo among the most prolific serial killers in U.S. history.

Crude maps drawn by Shermantine after more than a decade of silence on the fate and whereabouts of his victims helped lead authorities last February to the skeletal remains of five teen girls and young women, including 16-year-old JoAn Hobson, who disappeared in 1985. No one was ever charged with her murder.

Hobson's sister, Michelle Loftis, told Reuters on Friday she would continue to press authorities to search for additional remains.

"I feel for the FBI to give up would be a travesty for the rest of these families," she said.

A jury convicted Shermantine in 2001 of four murders, and Herzog was found guilty in a separate trial of three slayings, one that overlapped with Shermantine's case.

While Shermantine was later sentenced to death, Herzog's conviction was reduced on appeal to a single count of manslaughter and he was paroled after 11 years in prison.

Herzog committed suicide by hanging in January 2012, just hours after learning that Shermantine was starting to pinpoint grave sites.

In a rare step authorized by state lawmakers, Shermantine was briefly released under guard from his death row cell last August to personally guide FBI agents to additional sites he claimed were dumping grounds for his victims.

His unusual daylong furlough led authorities to four more defunct wells. After surveying the sites, the FBI dug in an area Shermantine later complained in letters to reporters was the wrong place.

The FBI insisted it was excavating the most likely site based on information from Shermantine and its own investigation.

Only the Tories have a grip on energy

Reliant on generous subsidies financed by hidden charges on household energy bills, turbines do not produce enough energy to justify the expense. They are almost comically unreliable. As Christopher Booker notes in his column, during a period of low wind last Monday, all 4,300 of our turbines working together provided just 0.1 per cent of the nation?s electricity. Ironically, when wind fails to do its job, consumers have to fall back on the very fossil fuels that it was designed to replace.

Nor are wind farms as environmentally friendly as their supporters think. The turbines can be a blot on the landscape. Andrew Gilligan reports that thousands of turbines actually create more greenhouse gases than they save; when they are constructed in upland areas on peat soil, large amounts of carbon can be released into the atmosphere.

What Britain really needs to do is press ahead with building gas-fired power stations, encourage firms to start exploiting shale gas deposits ? potentially a rich source of cheap energy ? and support nuclear. Alas, not all the parties grasp this. During its time in power, Labour turned its back on coal and nuclear to allay understandable fears about environmental damage. Instead, it signed the country up to ambitious targets for cutting CO2 emissions and committed us to wind as a way to plug gaps in energy supply. As Mr Huhne?s predecessor at the Department for Energy and Climate Change, Ed Miliband backed a Climate Change Bill that legally bound the UK to cut CO2 emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.

As part of the Coalition, the Lib Dems have aped Labour?s approach and brought to it new levels of naivity. It is true that even Mr Huhne conceded that nuclear must play a significant role in Britain?s future, but he seemed far more excited by the promises of wind power. The Lib Dems pushed the Coalition into backing even higher EU emissions targets, which would be very difficult to achieve in today?s economic climate. This is why some European countries are ignoring those targets and returning to coal.

Fortunately, George Osborne seems to have a firmer grip on reality. The Chancellor has recently indicated that he would prefer to water down emissions targets in order to increase Britain?s exploitation of gas. After years of chasing the green vote the Conservatives are waking up to the full implications of the energy gap. To get his way within the Coalition, Mr Osborne needs and deserves the moral support of the voters.

Mr Huhne?s colourful record, the by-election in his former constituency and the troubling news about our growing energy gap, ought to clarify the politics for people as they make their choice: on one side we have Labour and the Lib Dems stuck in an outdated mindset, when bold emissions targets and wind power seemed feasible; on the other, the good news is that the Tories understand that while protecting the environment is important, so is getting the economy moving. The voters of Eastleigh have a splendid opportunity to send a message that green fundamentalism is unaffordable in an age of austerity.

Major snowstorm lashes U.S. Great Plains, heads east

Kansas City, Missouri (Reuters) - A major winter storm pounded the U.S. Great Plains on Thursday creating hazardous travel that resulted in at least one death, closing schools, scuttling air travel, and cutting off power to some communities.

Winter storm warnings and advisories were in place for much of the central and southern Plains and into the upper Midwest and Mississippi River Valley as the storm moved east, packing snow, sleet and freezing rain, the National Weather Service said.

Ice storm warnings were in effect for parts of northern Arkansas. The massive storm was expected to spawn thunderstorms and rain on its southern edge from eastern Texas to Georgia, the forecaster said.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency because of hazardous travel and possible power outages. Kansas Governor Sam Brownback ordered state offices closed because of the storm.

Kansas City encountered an unusual mixture of snow, thunder and lightning, with 2 to 3 inches of snow falling per hour.

"When there is thunder and lightning, it's a pretty screaming clue that you are going to have massive snowfall," said Andy Bailey, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. A foot of snow is likely there by Thursday afternoon, he said.

In Nebraska, a woman was killed in a two-car Interstate 80 accident Wednesday afternoon near Giltner. The victim was identified as Kristina Leigh Allen, 19, of Calloway, Nebraska. The Nebraska State Patrol said weather was a factor.

More than 90 percent of flights out of Kansas City International Airport were canceled Thursday morning, according the airport website.

Some 55 commuter flights were canceled out of Denver International Airport overnight, mostly due to adverse conditions in Midwestern destinations in Kansas and Nebraska, said spokeswoman Laura Coale.

About 30 flights in and out of Omaha's Eppley Airfield were canceled by mid-morning Thursday.

The brunt of the snowstorm churned through Kansas, causing scores of accidents and vehicles sliding off roads, but no fatalities, according to the state highway patrol. Two semi-trucks got stuck on Interstate 35 near Emporia, Kansas, closing the southbound lane Thursday morning, according to transportation officials.

"Most of the issues we are dealing with are people getting stuck in the snow on ramps when they go to exit," said Gary Warner of the Kansas Highway Patrol office in Wichita. Snow on Wednesday resulted in about 50 crashes with no injuries and 11 with injuries on Wichita area highways, he said.

Some parts of southeast Kansas reported power outages because warmer temperatures created sleet and ice on power lines, said Sharon Watson, spokesperson for Kansas emergency management services.

The snowstorm had been predicted well in advance, convincing schools and offices to close and keeping a lot of people off the roads, said Watson.

On the positive side, the snow also meant some relief for drought-stricken regions of the Great Plains, one of the world's biggest wheat-growing areas.

In Oklahoma, up to 12.5 inches of snow fell in northern parts of the state while schools were closed throughout the Oklahoma City area because of treacherous driving conditions.

Areas of southwest and central Nebraska received eight inches of snow overnight, according to the National Weather Service. Snowfall of three to four inches was widespread in central Nebraska.

Omaha and Lincoln in eastern Nebraska were bracing for about eight or more inches of snow.

Even as students were making their way to school this morning in Iowa, administrators in dozens of districts announced early dismissals.

Few of the 150 members of the Iowa General Assembly were in the state capitol in Des Moines this morning, deciding not to brave the weather.

Snow from the powerful storm fell as far south as Tucson, Arizona, on Wednesday. The rare snowfall halted play at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play tournament near Tucson.

(AP) ? Residents in this swath of sprawling Chicago neighborhoods and suburbs have brimmed with loyalty to Jesse Jackson Jr. over the past 17 years, giving him an enthusiastic majority each election ? even after questionable links to ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich, reports of an extramarital affair and a bizarre five-month medical leave.

But the former congressman's guilty plea to charges that he lived off and lavishly spent campaign money for personal use ? on everything from toilet paper to mink capes ? has turned the tide. In territory where it was difficult to scrape up any criticism of Jackson, his Chicago alderman wife or his famous civil rights leader father, the mood is now simply one of disappointment.

"He knew better; it was a very stupid thing to do," said 75-year-old Jeannette Reese, shaking her head as she grocery-shopped at a busy shopping complex. "He and his father came to our church. I thought he was the real thing."

Reese said she had voted for the younger Jackson for years.

Jackson, who resigned from office in November, pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court in Washington to criminal charges that he engaged in a scheme to spend $750,000 in campaign funds on personal items. He faces up to 57 months ? more than four years ? in prison and a fine, under a plea deal with prosecutors.

It was an emotional day for Jackson, 47, who held back tears as he addressed the federal judge, just hours before his wife pleaded guilty to filing false joint federal income tax returns that knowingly understated the income the couple received. She faces up to two years in prison and a fine.

"I did these things," Jackson told the judge, adding later, "Sir, for years I lived in my campaign."

Jackson first won office in a 1995 special election and developed widespread support from mayors who said he delivered and constituents who valued his family legacy and said he gave them a voice. That support persevered even through an intense primary challenge last year from former one-term U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson who made Jackson's ethical troubles central to her campaign. He came away with the easy majority even as he remained under a House Ethics Committee investigation for ties to Blagojevich, who's serving a federal prison sentence on allegations that he tried to profit from President Barack Obama's former U.S. Senate Seat.

Even the most loyal Jackson supporters who praised him for bringing home nearly $1 billion in federal funding to the district were rattled.

"I hate that circumstances ended up like they did," said Ford Heights Mayor Charles Griffin. His small community south of Chicago ? one of Illinois' poorest ? got a boost in its water system because of Jackson.

Still, Griffin did not want to pile on criticism. "His situation is between the court system and the family," the mayor said.

Next week, voters in the heavily Democratic district head to the polls in a special primary to replace him. The crowded field of candidates includes Halvorson, former state Rep. Robin Kelly and Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale.

Jackson is scheduled to be sentenced June 28 and his wife on July 1. Both Jacksons, who maintain homes in Washington and Chicago, are free until sentencing.

More details emerged in a 22-page statement compiled by prosecutors and filed Wednesday. In it, Jackson admitted that he and his wife used campaign credit cards to buy thousands of personal items worth $582,772.58 from 2005 through April of last year. The most lavish purchases included the spending of more than $43,000 on a gold-plated men's Rolex watch.

Court papers said more than $60,000 was shelled out for restaurant, nightclub and lounge outings. Money was also spent on a washer, a dryer, a range and a refrigerator for the Jacksons' Chicago home.

Jackson even arranged for the use of campaign money to buy two mounted elk heads for his congressional office, according to court documents.

Jackson entered the courtroom Wednesday holding hands with his wife and looking a bit dazzled as he surveyed the packed room. He kissed his wife and headed to the defense table.

After the hearing he shouted to a reporter: "Tell everybody back home I'm sorry I let them down, OK?"

The Chicago Democrat disappeared from the public eye last June for a medical leave, though details on his condition and location were always scarce. Doctors later said he suffers from bipolar disorder and was hospitalized at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

His attorney said after the court appearance that Jackson's health is "not an excuse" for his actions, "just a fact." Jackson's father has said that his son remains under strict medical supervision.

One attorney, Reid Weingarten, told reporters after the hearing that there's reason for optimism.

"A man that talented, a man that devoted to public service, a man who's done so much for so many, has another day," he said. "There will be another chapter in Jesse Jackson's life."

All Hotmail accounts switch to Outlook by summer

It's official: Outlook.com will fully replace Hotmail as Microsoft's webmail service. The company will begin to auto-update accounts, and hopes they will be fully migrated from Hotmail to Outlook.com by this summer.

The move was spurred by surprise growth in the Outlook.com mail service, which has amassed 60 million active users in just six months. Microsoft will also remove the "customer preview" label on the product, and launch a multimillion-dollar marketing campaign.

Also read: How Microsoft can regain its footing
(Hint: Less Windows, more Office)

I know the first thing you're thinking: "Does this mean my Hotmail address will just go away?" No. It just means that when you go to hotmail.com, you will be re-routed to Outlook.com, and when you log in on the Web, you will get the Outlook.com experience. You can keep your @hotmail.com email address forever, but you can also use that account to create multiple new @outlook.com email addresses, too, if you so desire.

And let me tell you, you shouldn't wait for Microsoft to switch your old Hotmail service over to Outlook.com. I am an unabashed Hotmail hater, but who can forgive the original webmail service for being so far behind the times? Even when Microsoft spent millions on a "new Hotmail" ad campaign a scant two years ago, nobody was fooled: You still had to refresh the thing every time you wanted to know if you had mail.

Enter Outlook.com, which really can give Gmail a run for its money. It's a very smart service with a very streamlined design, tasteful social integration and auto organization features such as inbox "sweep" and scheduled cleanup. Because of this last bit, it's ideal for use either as a main email or as a "spam account," the kind you provide to online retailers and other data collectors.

(Switching your account over takes almost no effort: Just log into Hotmail then click Settings at the top right ? you will see the option to convert to Outlook.)

Though Microsoft was pleased at the sudden growth of Outlook.com users, I grilled David Law, director of product management for Outlook.com, about how many of the 60 million users were just converts from Hotmail's existing 350 million or so accounts. My supposition is that this represents almost all of them, but while Law wouldn't tell me the number, he did say I would be surprised how many were totally fresh.

Law was forthcoming about a different statistic, one that demonstrates Microsoft's target: About one third of the current Outlook.com users are ? or, at least, were ? also Gmail users.

Outlook.com is a very welcome email option, and ? when partnered with the company's SkyDrive cloud storage services ? a sign that Microsoft may well regain some traction with consumers looking for reliable Web services.

One of its only obvious problems is that of branding: Because it's called "Outlook," many people (naturally) assume that it is some kind of Web client for managing any email account. It's not. It's a free service, like Gmail or Yahoo mail or, yes, Hotmail, that provides you with an email account. So don't go asking if you can create an Outlook.com account and then add your corporate email to it, because that's like asking if you can take Google Maps and stick Mapquest into it.

Perhaps that's why Microsoft is spending a lot of money on explanatory ads now. Like this one, featuring the irresistable audio stylings of Seattle's own Macklemore & Ryan Lewis:

Hamishwillee - Still supposed to be in draft?

Let me know when this is ready to be reviewed by removing the "Draft" category

Vinayppatil -

Yeah. Will be done today. Will let you know.

Vinayppatil - Done with wiki

Hi Hamish,

I am done with creating this wiki page. Removed draft category as well. It is open for review now.

Hamishwillee - Thanks, hope to review tomorrow

Thanks, I hope to review tomorrow

Note, matchedOpernad is probably typo - matchedOperand

I've been thinking about this and I think the single digit calculator is pretty straightforward. The hard bit will be handling larger numbers like 134545 - since presumably you need to define all the possible <ListenFor> {number1} {operator} {number2} </ListenFor>

{number1}{number2}{number3}{number4} {operator} {number5}{number6} etc and all possible variants for the different number of numbers that might be specified.

You might be better off for this case using voice commands only to trigger off a speach to text session, then manually parse the output. A bit annoying you can't get the contents of a wildcard, as that would make this simpler.

Cheerio

Hamishwillee - Subedit/Review

HI Vinay

OK, I have given this a basic subedit for Wiki style and English. The main change is to the structure - I've more clearly separated the "basic calculator" and voice control stuff. I know it is tempting to have the "main selling point first" but it doesn't work too well, if you then go on talking about the other bits. I've also fixed typographic errors. Please check you're still happy

I don't really like the "Voice Commands Overview" because it isn't very clear. Not sure best way to improve it (I tidied a little bit).

I propose renaming, because its useful to include the platform (WP) in the name. Something like "Talking Calculator for Windows Phone" or "Speech enabled Calculator for Windows Phone"

In terms of implemenation, do you need to define both number1 and number2 in the phrase list - can't you just do:

<ListenFor> {number} {operator} {number} </ListenFor>

If so this is good.

In terms of suggestions, I think that the best thing you could do is not leave "support for bigger numbers" to the user to implement, since this is the "hard" technical problem. I have no idea of the best way to do this - even just adding support for two numbers is hard, and the below assumes that people have to enter eleven as one one.

{number} {operator} {number} {number}  {number} {operator} {number} {number} {operator} {number} {number} {number} {number} {operator} {number} {number}

Otherwise thanks, well written. Regards

H

Vinayppatil - Thanks

Hi Hamish,

Thanks for reviewing the code. I am very happy with the changes you made. And thanks for suggesting names for this wiki page. Even i was not too happy with the name. I will change it soon.

<ListenFor> {number} {operator} {number} </ListenFor>

If we do this it will be difficult to fetch parameters from the query string.

Also regarding "support for bigger numbers", yes it is complex in terms of implementation that's why i had included it in "TODO" section. But i will see if i can include it here. I am also adding speech recognition support in this wiki.

Regards,

Vinay

vinayppatil 08:34, 13 December 2012 (EET)

Hamishwillee - Thanks!

>If we do this it will be difficult to fetch parameters from the query string.

Of course, makes perfect sense. It might be worth adding a Note explaining this (completely up to you)

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with! A solution to the support for bigger numbers problem would certainly set this article apart.

Regards

Hamish

Vinayppatil - Wiki modified

Hi Hamish,

I modified the whole logic. As per your suggestions now voice commands can only invoke the app and speech input is taken using Speech Recognition instead of Voice Commands.

And RegExp helped me solve problem with bigger numbers. Have a look at Parsing_Matched_Commands

It will be of great help if you can review the added content as i did it in very short time.

Regards,

Vinay

Vinayppatil - Changed title

Hi Hamish,

Also i moved "Taking Calculator" to "Speech Enabled Calculator For Windows Phone 8". Kindly change it in competition entries section.

Regards,

Vinay

vinayppatil 12:12, 14 December 2012 (EET)

Hamishwillee - I don't have time to subedit sorry

However I have reviewed, and I like your improvements.

If I had to make one suggestion, it would be describing how your article works - ie uses both recognition and voice commands (and why) as part of the introduction or of the introduction to section - because the reasons you did this are interesting and important. Something for you to think about - not part of the competition.

Regards

Hamish

hamishwillee 06:12, 19 December 2012 (EET)

Hamishwillee - or to clarify ...

We know that the voice commands only allow you to create a very inflexible calculator. This is worth stating, so that people understand why you've just used them to start the app. You don't say this anywhere.

hamishwillee 06:16, 19 December 2012 (EET)

Hi,

I have no idea how but i missed your comments made on 19 dec and reading them now. Will make the changes ASAP.

Regards,

Vinay

Vinayppatil - Included changes

Hi Hamish, Included the changes in [Introduction] and [Why Use Speech Recognition] sections.

Water on the moon: It's been there all along

Feb. 18, 2013 ? Traces of water have been detected within the crystalline structure of mineral samples from the lunar highland upper crust obtained during the Apollo missions, according to a University of Michigan researcher and his colleagues.

The lunar highlands are thought to represent the original crust, crystallized from a magma ocean on a mostly molten early moon. The new findings indicate that the early moon was wet and that water there was not substantially lost during the moon's formation.

The results seem to contradict the predominant lunar formation theory -- that the moon was formed from debris generated during a giant impact between Earth and another planetary body, approximately the size of Mars, according to U-M's Youxue Zhang and his colleagues.

"Because these are some of the oldest rocks from the moon, the water is inferred to have been in the moon when it formed," Zhang said. "That is somewhat difficult to explain with the current popular moon-formation model, in which the moon formed by collecting the hot ejecta as the result of a super-giant impact of a martian-size body with the proto-Earth.

"Under that model, the hot ejecta should have been degassed almost completely, eliminating all water."

A paper titled "Water in lunar anorthosites and evidence for a wet early moon" was published online Feb. 17 in the journal Nature Geoscience. The first author is Hejiu Hui, postdoctoral research associate of civil and environmental engineering and earth sciences at the University of Notre Dame. Hui received a doctorate at U-M under Zhang, a professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and one of three co-authors of the Nature Geoscience paper.

Over the last five years, spacecraft observations and new lab measurements of Apollo lunar samples have overturned the long-held belief that the moon is bone-dry.

In 2008, laboratory measurement of Apollo lunar samples by ion microprobe detected indigenous hydrogen, inferred to be the water-related chemical species hydroxyl, in lunar volcanic glasses. In 2009, NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing satellite, known as LCROSS, slammed into a permanently shadowed lunar crater and ejected a plume of material that was surprisingly rich in water ice.

Hydroxyls have also been detected in other volcanic rocks and in the lunar regolith, the layer of fine powder and rock fragments that coats the lunar surface. Hydroxyls, which consist of one atom of hydrogen and one of oxygen, were also detected in the lunar anorthosite study reported in Nature Geoscience.

In the latest work, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to analyze the water content in grains of plagioclase feldspar from lunar anorthosites, highland rocks composed of more than 90 percent plagioclase. The bright-colored highlands rocks are thought to have formed early in the moon's history when plagioclase crystallized from a magma ocean and floated to the surface.

The infrared spectroscopy work, which was conducted at Zhang's U-M lab and co-author Anne Peslier's lab, detected about 6 parts per million of water in the lunar anorthosites.

"The surprise discovery of this work is that in lunar rocks, even in nominally water-free minerals such as plagioclase feldspar, the water content can be detected," said Zhang, the James R. O'Neil Collegiate Professor of Geological Sciences.

"It's not 'liquid' water that was measured during these studies but hydroxyl groups distributed within the mineral grain," said Notre Dame's Hui. "We are able to detect those hydroxyl groups in the crystalline structure of the Apollo samples."

The hydroxyl groups the team detected are evidence that the lunar interior contained significant water during the moon's early molten state, before the crust solidified, and may have played a key role in the development of lunar basalts.

"The presence of water," said Hui, "could imply a more prolonged solidification of the lunar magma ocean than the once-popular anhydrous moon scenario suggests."

The researchers analyzed grains from ferroan anorthosites 15415 and 60015, as well as troctolite 76535. Ferroan anorthosite 15415 is one the best known rocks of the Apollo collection and is popularly called the Genesis Rock because the astronauts thought they had a piece of the moon's primordial crust. It was collected on the rim of Apur Crater during the Apollo 15 mission.

Rock 60015 is highly shocked ferroan anorthosite collected near the lunar module during the Apollo 16 mission. Troctolite 76535 is a coarse-grained plutonic rock collected during the Apollo 17 mission.

Co-author Peslier is at Jacobs Technology and NASA's Johnson Space Center. The fourth author of the Nature Geoscience paper, Clive Neal, is a professor of civil and environmental engineering and earth sciences at the University of Notre Dame. The work was supported by NASA.

Bridgewater business owner has big plans, including roadside stand and eventually mini golf

Steven Prisco has big plans for this small town. He has ever since 2006, when he and his wife Nancy bought land off Route 18 where Prisco?s Market & Deli now stands.

Last week, those plans edged forward as Prisco began to build out the next stage of his mom-and-pop market.

Construction has started, he said, on a roadside stand set to open in April, which the business?s Facebook fans have already christened as Prisco?s Country Creamery.

?I think we?re really going to hit a home run with this,? Prisco said Friday.

The town?s building inspector signed off on the 1,200-square-foot project last month.

Prisco describes the idea as a ?game-changer? for his business and a win-win for Bridgewater, expected to create 15 to 20 more jobs in the community.

The stand will set closer to the roadway and act as a mini Prisco?s Market & Deli, serving people in need of a quick lunch ? everything from hot dogs to meatballs and fried clams. And of course, ice cream, bought wholesale from Puritan of Roslindale. Customers will be asked to pick the flavors.

?I?m shooting to have one of the best roadside stands in New England,? he said.

Around the small snack shack will sit eight picnic tables, and plenty of room for parking, said Prisco, who hopes the stand will also draw customers to the market set back further down Romney Road.

He plans to run a 10-person golf cart as a shuttle service between the two.

Nick Palmeiri, president of the Bridgewater business association, said the addition could be a boon for Bridgewater, bringing people in who might also shop at other stores in town.

?We, as a community, for years talked about the fact that we need to build our business base,? Palmeiri said Friday. ?Any business that you can bring into town, any quality business, is an asset to us, plain and simple.?

Next up on Prisco?s agenda? A mini golf course, but that could be a few years down the road.

The big plan, is to become a family-friendly destination and a mainstay in the community.

?We want a place where people from the local area, and 25 miles around, they have a place to come that?s clean fun and affordable,? he said. ?That?s my goal.?
