A bigger, better Infinity Blade 2 coming to iOS devices December 1 (Appolicious)

The best things in life are worth waiting for, particularly sequels to revolutionary video games you can play on mobile devices. Infinity Blade 2, a follow-up to the state-of-the-art title that debuted on Apple?s iOS devices a year ago, drops on Dec. 1 and is arguably the most anticipated game to hit the platform this year.

Developer ChAIR Entertainment raised the bar on what the iPhone (as well as iPad and iPod touch) was capable of creating in terms of graphics, and the original Infinity Blade was among the first games to use publisher Epic Games? Unreal Engine 3 to render its realistic 3-D graphics.

With Infinity Blade, ChAIR and Epic set a new standard on the kinds of games that could be brought to Apple?s mobile devices. The title featured a simple premise that had players taking on the role of a lone warrior venturing through a series of sword duels on the road to fighting the God King, a powerful final boss. When players were killed by the God King (as they often were), they would take on the role of their former character?s descendant ? retaining all the equipment and powers they had gained along the way ? to give battling the God King another go. The game packs graphics on-par with some console video games, and the developer received awards as well as plenty of sales for the title. The graphics on Infinity Blade 2, as you can see below, do not disappoint.

A hard act to follow

The follow up to Infinity Blade has some serious shoes to fill, but ChAIR is bringing quite a few new features to bear with the title. Right out of the gate, the game is optimized for Apple?s top-of-the-line hardware, leveraging the power of the dual-core A5 chips found in the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2. Graphically, Infinity Blade 2 should follow its predecessor in setting the bar for graphics on mobile devices across the board.

ChAIR is also bringing back everything that worked about Infinity Blade including its low-impact navigation system, simple but responsive touch controls and focus on a few core elements of sword-dueling fun. It's adding a lot more to the package the second time around. There?s a much bigger emphasis on the game?s storyline this time out, whereas Infinity Blade had very little. In fact, Epic and ChAIR have released a novella on iTunes called ?Infinity Blade: Awakening,? which bridges the gap between the two games.

In terms of technical improvements, ChAIR has worked on Infinity Blade 2?s touch controls to make them more responsive and let players feel more attuned to the actions of their characters. Sword-fighting is handled in much the same way: players dodge, block or parry enemy attacks until they can find an opening in that enemy?s defenses, at which point they slash away as quickly as possible to rack-up damage.

Bigger and better

But around this simple kernel, a lot of cool new things have been added. Navigation is straightforward, but the game world has been substantially expanded. You won?t just gather new equipment, you?ll actually gather materials to improve the items you find or forge new ones. ChAIR also added new fighting styles for players to explore. Instead of just battling with a sword and a shield, for instance, you?ll now be able to wield two weapons at once (or a two-handed weapon). All three styles fundamentally change the way you?ll have to approach Infinity Blade 2?s battles.

While ChAIR is improving a lot of what the first Infinity Blade had to offer for its second go-round, what is most interesting is how much the game is going to take advantage of everything that Apple?s iOS system has to offer. Along with the use of the A5 chip for some of the most stunning graphics available on the platform, the game will use iCloud to allow players to switch devices mid-game. Additionally, gamers will be able to take advantage of features found exclusively within iOS 5, Apple?s mobile operating system that debuted earlier this year. This includes playing the game on a TV screen using iOS 5?s HDMI output feature.

Infinity Blade 2 stands ready to be the first iOS title to really make use of everything the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iOS 5 have to offer. It?s hard not to be excited for ChAIR?s new release. It has a hefty pedigree to live up to following its first title, but it sounds like Infinity Blade 2 is going to be the game that sets the high water mark for iOS titles in 2012.

Mayor pushes $170 water bill cut

Mayor Ron Clarke says water bills could be cut by at least $170 a year

WATER bills could fall by at least $170 a year if an audacious challenge by outgoing Mayor Ron Clarke is adopted by an incoming council.

Cr Clarke, who will retire at the council election on March 31, said a report to be handed down before a full contingent of Gold Coast City councillors today paved the way for future water and wastewater service fee reductions.

The report by auditing firm KPMG is expected to show there would be minimal additional cost to the $27.2 million already allocated by the council to disconnect from Allconnex Water and re-establish Gold Coast Water.

The council decided in June to pull out of Allconnex Water after a vigorous outcry from residents over significant increases to water bills.

But the decision sparked further criticism after accusations the disconnection could cost ratepayers more than $200 million.

Cr Clarke said the KPMG report, which he endorsed yesterday, proved such accusations ''had always been nonsense'', with the final cost expected to come in at just over the $27.2 million already set aside in the 2011/12 Budget.

''This is great news for ratepayers,'' Cr Clarke said.

''(Councillors) have all the weapons now to do what they should be doing.

''I believe the new Gold Coast City Council should insist on a reduction of at least $170 per annum for its residents.

''Surely Gold Coast Water can be as efficient as Unity Water (the supplier for Brisbane residents).''

Cr Clarke said Gold Coast residents currently paid $308 more per year for water than their Brisbane counterparts.

''I believe that is far too high and that is why the whole resolution to take over from Allconnex came about,'' he said.

''I think this puts us into a position where we can have that price reduced from next financial year.''

Cr Clarke said the $170 reduction would be gained via a reduction in service charges as opposed to bulk water charges which are dictated by the State Government and unable to be altered.

But Cr Bob La Castra, who on Friday described council's decision to opt out of Allconnex as ''the worst decision in the history of local government'', said he could not fathom the mayor's interpretation of the KPMG report.

''KPMG must have written two reports and sent one to the mayor for his eyes only because I don't know how he could interpret what he's put in his media release if he's read the same report that I've read,'' Cr La Castra said.

''That is from another planet, it is not even close. You could not come to that conclusion from the report I've read.''

>>> as you watch this, please remember while it is arresting to see, the pilot was okay. no one on the ground was hurt. the chopper was going to lower a christmas display on a public plaza on the water. pay close attention to a man working on the ground holding onto a cable leading to the chopper. he tries to flip it to a better position and it sounds like a riffle shot when the chopper goes down. at first you can see the pilot seemingly lifeless hand on the passenger seat but after he regains consciousness, he walks away with assistance. now after the trauma he said he has no memory of the incident. but he's okay.

Russians to cut Putin's party majority in vote: poll (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russians will strip Vladimir Putin's ruling party of its huge majority in parliament at the December 4 election, narrowing the paramount leader's room for legislative maneuver when he returns to the Kremlin, a leading pollster predicted on Friday.

Based on its last major opinion survey before the election, Russia's biggest independent pollster said the United Russia party would win about 252-253 places in the 450-seat lower house of parliament, down from the 315 it has now.

If the party's majority is cut to 28 seats, Putin could still push through laws after the March 4 presidential vote he is almost certain to win, but he would have to enlist other parties' support for big changes like constitutional amendments.

The decline in support reflects what pollsters say is a sense of fatigue with the entrenched party and even with Putin, whose approval ratings remain high but who was jeered in public at a martial arts fight in Moscow last Sunday.

"The feeling is rising that the elections are being manipulated, are dishonest, and that is delegitimizing the entire system of power," said Lev Gudkov, director of Levada-Center which carried out the poll.

"United Russia is conducting quite a weak electoral campaign," Gudkov told reporters in Moscow.

"It doesn't really have much of a program."

Putin has tasked President Dmitry Medvedev with leading United Russia into the parliamentary election, and has hinted a poor showing by the party could affect his plan to appoint Medvedev as prime minister in a job swap announced in September.

United Russia could cede 50 seats to the Communist Party and the nationalist LDPR, the Levada poll showed.

"Campaign-wise, I don't see much of it actually," said Vitaly, a 30-year-old driver in Moscow who said he supported Putin.

"They give out calendars with the United Russia logo on them, but calendars are not enough. I don't see any party going and talking to people. There needs to be more campaigning."

PUTIN RATING

An outburst of boos and whistling at Putin by fans at a martial arts fight last Sunday, and a sharp fall in opinion poll ratings earlier this month, had raised concerns Putin may be losing his legendary political touch.

Signs of disenchantment with Putin, who ruled as president from 2000-08, are extremely worrying for the Kremlin's political managers: Putin's self-portrayal as the anchor of Russian stability depends on his popularity.

But in Levada's November 18-21 poll, Putin's approval rating rose to 67 percent from a decade low of 61 percent recorded at the beginning of the month. Medvedev's was flat at 62 percent.

"Putin will easily win in the first round because the political field is managed and opponents have been sidelined," Gudkov said of the presidential election, which the upper house of parliament said on Friday would take place on March 4.

Supporters say Putin is popular because he brought order after the chaos which accompanied the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, though opponents say he has crafted a brittle political system too dependent on his own patronage.

Levada predicted the Communist Party would come second in the parliamentary election with about 94 seats, followed by LDPR, winning 59 seats, and the Just Russia party with 44 seats.

"There are a range of polls which show fatigue with this party," said Boris Dubin, an expert at Levada, said of United Russia.

He said there was a perception among voters that United Russia had not "achieved earth-shattering successes in either cementing stability or increasing living standards."

Lukoil's Q3 profit drops 20 pct to $2.2 billion

(AP) ? Russia's second-largest oil producer Lukoil said Friday that its third-quarter profit dropped 20 percent because of higher taxes and a slump in the ruble.

The Moscow-based company said Friday that the $570 million decline to $2.2 billion had been caused by the depreciation of the Russian ruble. This includes $340 million it spent on tax on foreign currency translation gain.

The Russian ruble, battered by turmoil on European markets, lost about 15 percent of its value against the U.S. dollar between June 30 and September 30 at the MICEX stock exchange.

Lukoil said its net income was affected by writing down the costs of drilling exploratory wells.

The decline in profit stands in contrast to a 26 percent hike in revenues between July and September, to $34.6 billion from $26.5 billion.

The company said its strict financial discipline and efficient costs management helped them generate a cash flow of $7.7 billion in the nine months of the year against slightly under $7 billion a year ago.

Oil analysts at the Moscow-based UralSib investment bank said in a note to investors earlier this week that it expected the results to be worse that of other Russian oil companies, but said it does not expect Lukoil to underperform in the future.

"Compared to its Russian peers, Lukoil is much more exposed to international product markets where product prices are more flexible than on domestic market," UralSib said in the note.

Lukoil's shares were up 2.3 percent at the MICEX, outperforming the market.

Dave Astor: Giving Thanks for Putting Away Childish Literary Things

As I write this on Thanksgiving weekend, I give thanks to the books that turn adolescent readers into adult readers. For me, it was one 19th-century novel by a woman, and one 20th-century novel by a man.

All of us who love books started with simpler fare. Perhaps it was Goodnight Moon, then The Cat in the Hat, and then kid-oriented novels such as Danny Dunn and the Homework Machine (about an early computer big enough to hold gazillions of smartphones!).

But by the time we reach our mid-teens, English teachers up the ante. Two books on their agenda when I was that age included Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath -- both of which made me groan before I cracked their covers. A novel about some oddball governess? A farm family leaving Oklahoma? Bor-r-ring.

Then I read those two books, and my literary landscape was transformed. There was no going back to kid fiction with few nuances and little complexity. Danny Dunn was done.

Though I was a 20th-century American male, I strongly related to the British female protagonist in Bronte's 1847 novel. Jane Eyre somehow transcended time, place, and gender -- like all great literary characters can do. I admired her ethics, intelligence, independence, and self-sufficiency. Plus I was sort of a loner like her, and was from modest economic circumstances like her.

Meanwhile, The Grapes of Wrath opened my eyes more widely to matters such as injustice, gross economic inequality, and the importance of family. I was so taken with Steinbeck's 1939 novel that when I learned the movie version would be on TV at 2 a.m. one day, I stayed up to watch it despite having school just a few hours later. (This was before VCRs, of course.)

For all the lessons and such in those two books, the Bronte and Steinbeck classics were also darn good reads filled with suspense, pathos, believable dialogue, and flat-out excellent writing. Plus Jane Eyre was and is incredibly romantic.

Yes, after experiencing novels that meaty, it was time to "put away childish (literary) things." Soon, I was gobbling up Moby-Dick, The Scarlet Letter, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Native Son, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, various Charles Dickens books, and other classics.

For many readers now in their 20s, I suspect the Harry Potter series might have been the books that helped spark that adolescent-to-adult reading transition.

Which novels catapulted your younger self into the world of more sophisticated literature?

Discovery of a new muscle repair gene

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2011) ? An international team of researchers from England and the Charit? -- Universit?tsmedizin Berlin has presented new findings regarding the function of muscle stem cells, which are published in the current issue of the journal Nature Genetics. The researchers investigated several families with children suffering from a progressive muscle disease. Using a genetic analysis technique known as "next generation sequencing" the scientists identified a defective gene called MEGF10 responsible for the muscle weakness.

The children suffer from severe weakness of the body musculature and of the inner organs like the diaphragm, the main breathing muscle. The consequences are that the little patients are only able to move in a wheelchair and need continuous artificial respiration. These children often have to be tube-fed as well since the musculature of the esophagus does not work properly.

But which role plays the discovered gene here and is involved in muscle growth? In healthy humans the muscle stem cells, so called "satellite cells" stick on muscle fibers and normally remain inactive. If a muscle fiber becomes damaged or muscle growth is stimulated, as it is in muscle training, the satellite cells start to divide, fuse with the muscle fiber and so cause muscle growth.

This process is disrupted in the ill children. For them, the necessary protein which is responsible for the attachment of the satellite cells cannot be developed by the mutated MEGF10 gene. Therefore, these cells cannot stick on the muscle fibre -- the muscle cannot be repaired any longer.

Prof. Markus Schuelke from the NeuroCure Clinical Research Center of the Cluster of Excellence NeuroCure and the Department of Neuropediatrics of the Charit? and Prof. Colin A. Johnson from the Institute of Molecular Medicine of the University Leeds, who jointly directed this research project have emphasized the importance of these new methods for genome analysis and give a positive outlook for the future. "This is good news for families with unexplained rare genetic disorders. These methods enable us to sequence hundreds or even thousands of genes at the same time and discover novel genetic defects even in single patients quickly but also cost effective" explains Markus Schuelke. "Many patients and their families often have been through a diagnostic Odyssey and can now hope that the cause of their disease will be found through this approach."

Obama Gives Rousing Jobs Speech in New Hampshire (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama returned to New Hampshire for the first time in two years to deliver a speech promoting his American Jobs Act in the gymnasium of Manchester's Central High School. As a candidate in the Granite State's first-in-the nation Presidential primary back in 2008, then-Senator Obama's appearance at Central was cut short by an impending snow storm, but MacArthur-like, he had vowed to return. He made good on his promise.

Though heckled briefly at the beginning of his speech by Occupy Wall Street protestors, the President was enthusiastically embraced by the crowd of high school seniors sitting in the bleachers and by citizens standing on the gym floor, which was sheathed in plastic to protect the parquet surface.

Fired Up

It was a diverse and upbeat crowd who were greeted by the Central High band's playing of classic rock songs, including The Beatles' "Back in the U.S.S.R." and the closing medley from the Fab Four's Abbey Road album called "The End". Lest anyone think that this was a bit of sly editorial commentary by the students of Central, they showed their true colors by shouting down the OWS hecklers who interrupted the President by chanting "O-ba-ma!"

President Obama was in full campaign mode, showing the "Fired Up and Ready to Go!" form that had helped him place a close second to front-runner Hillary Clinton in the 2008 primary. It seemed the President was reinvigorated by being on the hustings, though his trip to the Granite State was billed as official business to push for his jobs legislation and not as a political campaign stop.

The President squarely put the blame for the sluggish economy and lack of jobs on the Republicans in Congress, whom he chided for being obstructionists. He called on the Republicans to vote for the extension of his payroll tax cut to help stimulate the economy.

Two Senators & Two Candidates

Former Governor Jeanne Shaheen, the Democrat who is New Hampshire's senior senator, was in attendance at the event, though she did not speak. Senator Shaheen was signaled out by President Obama for praise for her support of his jobs plan and for voting for legislation that was part of his original jobs package that extends tax cuts to businesses that will put unemployed veterans back to work.

Two days ago, Republican Kelly Ayotte, the state's junior senator, gave her endorsement to Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney in a rather subdued affair in front of Nashua's City Hall. The crowd at Manchester's Central High was far more diverse than the white, seemingly prosperous citizens drawn to the Republican event. Their embrace of Obama, whom the right-leaning New Hampshire Union Leader newspaper mockingly called a "Rock Star" in its coverage of his impending trip, was far more enthusiastic than the Republicans' greeting of Mitt Romney on Sunday.

The front-runner among Republican Presidential candidates in New Hampshire, Romney launched his first television and print ads specifically attacking President Obama today, to coincide with the President's arrival in New Hampshire. The gist of Romney's ads is that Obama is a failure as a president in that he has failed to turn the economy around and provide jobs.

Since the rise and eclipse of Rick Perry and Herman Cain as front-runners in the Republican field (and the recent rise to the top of the polls of the seriously flawed Newt Gingrich) have left many with the perception that Romney is the presumptive GOP nominee, I view the President's trip to New Hampshire as the opening salvo of the 2012 Presidential campaign that most likely will pit Obama against Romney. Having witnessed both campaign events, Romney and Ayotte's Nashua appearance and now this whistle-stop by President Obama, I can say that Romney and other Republicans should be cautious: Barack is back!

STEVE BALLMER'S NIGHTMARE: How Microsoft's Business ...

Microsoft has sales of more than $60 billion a year, annual profits approaching $20 billion, nearly $60 billion in cash, and is still growing sales around 10% per year.

But somehow, many people in Silicon Valley are convinced that Microsoft is going to collapse. Soon. Like in the next few years.

This seems crazy.

But we've heard this argument enough times, from enough serious and intelligent people -- partners at big name VC firms, experienced executives, and startup gurus -- that we thought it was worth a serious look.

Here's the nightmare scenario that could keep Steve Ballmer and his minions awake at night -- and keep him working long hours during the day to prevent it.

Scientists testing HUD contact lenses on rabbits, hope to bring augmented reality to your eyeballs

Scientists at Washington University are a step closer to bringing us all some sweet information displaying contact lenses. The team has been successfully testing prototype lenses on rabbits -- though there are some major caveats here. First, due to limits of circuitry, they can only display a single light-emitting diode at a time. Also, the scientists have yet to figure out a workable energy source -- at present, they need to be within centimeters of a wireless battery. The researchers have big plans, however, including the display of holographic images -- and, no doubt, information about which targets to destroy.

Ohio group proposes ban on owning exotic animals (AP)

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? A study group on Monday proposed that Ohio ban new ownership of venomous snakes, monkeys, tigers and other dangerous animals with only limited exceptions and give state officials' the authority to take from private property any wildlife that's being kept illegally.

The group has held expedited meetings in private since last month, when police were forced to kill 48 wild animals ? including endangered Bengal tigers ? after their owner freed them from his Zanesville farm and then committed suicide.

A summary of the group's input and state agencies' recommendations for new regulations was obtained Monday by The Associated Press after the panel's final meeting.

The working group's recommendations for updating Ohio's laws are due to the governor by Nov. 30. Its finalized report will be sent next week.

The group's framework for legislation suggests the ban start on Jan. 1, 2014. Owners would have to meet new temporary safety standards before then and also register their animals with the state within 60 days of the law's effective date. Zoo, circuses and research facilities would be exempt. Animal sanctuaries with restricted animals would have to be licensed and regulated by the state.

The panel's recommendations are only suggestions to state lawmakers and Gov. John Kasich, a first-term Republican who convened the group in April to get their input. The members' ideas and the recommendations from the Ohio Department of National Resources and state Department of Agriculture would have to be drafted into legislation, heard before committees and passed by the legislature before becoming law.

The office of state Sen. Troy Balderson, a Zanesville native, has said he would pursue legislation as soon as the working group made its recommendations.

Under the group's recommendations, owners would face new criminal and civil penalties for keeping dangerous wildlife against state rules. And those who improperly release dangerous animals would also be punished. Details of any fines or jail time weren't included in Monday's report.

The group recommended that officials be given new authority to inspect and enforce the law on private property where dangerous animals are housed. In addition, the state would also set up a way for owners to voluntarily surrender the creatures.

Selling wild animals wouldn't be restricted prior to the date of the ban, though the summary hints that a tougher crackdown on the sale could soon follow.

"The hope is that by reducing impediments to sale, we will reduce the number of animals that are still in Ohio on the date of the possession ban, which will require confiscation and forfeiture," according to the summary of the group's framework.

Ultimately, the ability to buy, sell, and trade these animals will no longer be permitted in Ohio, said Laura Jones, a spokeswoman for the state's natural resources department. A final decision on how to move forward is still being worked out, she said.

The working group includes 10 organizations with a stake in the issue, among them the state's Department of Natural Resources, the Ohio Association of Animal Owners, the Ohio Farm Bureau and the Zoological Association of America.

The head of the Humane Society of the United States said his organization was encouraged by the group's recommendations and urged state lawmakers to advance the plan before the end of the year.

"It's now time for the legislature to act, and to do something that is proportional to the nature of this severe problem in Ohio," said Wayne Pacelle, the group's president and CEO, said in a statement.

Polly Britton, a lobbyist for the Ohio Association of Animal Owners, said she was disappointed facilities licensed and inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture wouldn't be exempt from the regulations. These licensees include exhibitors, breeders and dealers, she said.

"I'd be surprised if he (Kasich) wants to shut down small businesses, but that's what's going to happen," Britton said.

Ohio has some of the nation's weakest restrictions on exotic pets. Efforts to strengthen the regulations took on new urgency after farm owner Terry Thompson opened his cages and let his animals out on Oct. 18.

Police officers killed dozens of the animals, but three leopards, two monkeys and a young grizzly bear survived. They have been quarantined at the Columbus zoo, where they continue to be under observation, said Erica Pitchford, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Agriculture.

Zoo and state officials are trying to develop the animals' medical history and determine whether they are healthy enough to be tested for diseases, Pitchford said.

The animals must be anesthetized to have blood drawn. And there's a concern that if they put them to sleep before they're strong enough, they might not survive.

The state's Department of Agriculture ordered the animals be kept under quarantine at a zoo after Thompson's widow had sought to reclaim them. There's no expiration date on the quarantine, and there's not a timeline for the testing to occur, Pitchford said.

"Until everyone feels confident about how to go about putting those animals to sleep, we are going to continue to observe them and try to get them as healthy as possible," Pitchford said.

U.S., Europe debt fears hit stocks (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Worries about out-of-control government debt on both sides of the Atlantic swept across financial markets again on Monday, knocking stocks sharply lower and pushing up prices of bonds deemed to be safe havens.

As well as ongoing fears about Italy and other debt-strapped euro zone countries, attention was beginning to turn to the United States, where a bipartisan "super" committee looks set to miss a deficit reduction deadline.

"Europe is not the only one with debt problems ... in the United States there's a political gridlock," said David Thebault, head of quantitative sales trading, at Global Equities.

World stocks as measured by MSCI (.MIWD00000PUS) were down 0.9 percent for a more than 11.5 percent year-to-date loss. More volatile emerging market stocks (.MSCIEF) lost 1.7 percent.

In Europe -- the heart of the debt storm -- the FTSEurofirst 300 (.FTEU3) index lost 1.8 percent, tumbling to a six-week low and sitting more than 16.5 percent lower for the year.

Japan's Nikkei average (.N225) fell to its lowest closing level since March 2009 as the U.S. debt worries added to existing ones about Europe.

In the United States, sources said the bipartisan deficit-reduction committee will announce that they failed to meet their deadline to find $1.2 trillion in budget cuts over the next decade.

"Tomorrow could be scary, if the U.S. misses its deadline," Yutaka Miura, senior technical analyst at Mizuho Securities.

SPREADS WIDEN

On euro zone sovereign bond markets, spreads between troubled countries' and core German bonds yields widened. This included Spain, where the center-right won an overwhelming general election vote.

Despite the widening spreads, 10-year Italian bond yields were steady and below the key 7 percent level reached last week. Plus-7 percent yields have in the past signaled a countries need for a bailout.

Investors were favoring German debt as the safest bet in the current climate, but there were still concerns.

"Bunds didn't trade well last week, but a lot of that was a move out of anything European," said one trader.

"Nothing's really changed and liquidity is getting progressively worse. It feels like year-end is going to be particularly bad and that will just exaggerate moves either way."

The euro fell to a six-week low versus the Japanese yen -- seen as a safe haven.

It was also 0.4 percent down against the dollar at $1.345.

American Republicans Hope to Copy Spanish Conservative Success (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The Spanish conservatives won a decisive election Sunday, ousting the ruling Spanish Socialists. Could something similar happen in America in the 2012 election?

There are some striking similarities between the Spanish case and the American situation. The party in charge was blamed for the economic turmoil wracking the country. And the conservative Popular Party has been promoting change.

There are even more similarities between Popular Party leader Mariano Rajoy and the likely Republican nominee, Mitt Romney. And those similarities are more than just the initials "M.R." Rajoy has run before for office, like Romney. Rajoy is like Romney in that both rarely provide more than vague ideas on taxes and spending cuts. Both are relatively bland, struggle somewhat with providing a personal touch and adopt strategies of "flexibility." In other words, Spain picked a pragmatist instead of an ideologue and settled for flavorless over flamboyant.

That's what Republicans are doing by seriously considering picking Romney to lead the party. It should be comforting to the GOP that a Romneyesque candidate can win

But there are some differences between the two cases. First, Spain is a parliamentary system, where parties pick leaders and prime ministers, while voters merely pick seats. In America's presidential system, the party nominees are on the ballot.

Second, Spain's problems are more severe than ours. Spain's unemployment is a whopping 21.5 percent, more than twice as bad as America's rate.

Third, outgoing Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is no Barack Obama. The Spanish Socialist leader's ratings were far below that of the U.S. president. Not only had Zapatero been the country's leader since 2004 (twice as long as Obama), but he presided over his country's real estate bubble and meltdown.

Fourth, European analogies for American elections are not always perfect. American papers used the election results of 1992 in the United Kingdom (where conservative John Major of the Tories held off a challenge from the more liberal Neil Kinnock of the Labor Party) to predict success for George H.W. Bush against Bill Clinton. It didn't work out so well for the GOP.

Still, the Democratic Party can't afford to ignore how a conservative party with an uninspiring leader defeated left-of-center incumbents, holding them accountable for economic problems.

(AP) ? Security forces fired tear gas and clashed Monday with several thousand protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square in the third straight day of violence that has killed at least 24 people and has turned into the most sustained challenge yet to the rule of Egypt's military.

Throughout the day, young activists demanding the military hand over power to a civilian government skirmished with black-clad police, hurling stones and firebombs and throwing back the tear gas canisters being fired by police into the square, which was the epicenter of the protest movement that ousted President Hosni Mubarak in February.

The night before saw an escalation of the fighting as police launched a heavy assault that tried and failed to clear protesters from the square. In a show of the ferocity of the assault, the death toll leaped from Sunday evening until Monday morning. A constant stream of injured protesters ? bloodied from rubber bullets or overcome by gas ? were brought into makeshift clinics set out on sidewalks around the square where volunteer doctors scrambled from patient to patient.

The eruption of violence, which began Saturday, reflects the frustration and confusion that has mired Egypt's revolution since Mubarak fell and the military stepped in to take power.

It comes only a week before Egypt is to begin the first post-Mubarak parliamentary elections, which many have hoped would be a significant landmark in a transition to democracy.

Instead, the vote has been overshadowed by mounting anger at the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which will continue to hold power even after the vote. Activists accuse the generals of acting increasingly in the same autocratic way as Mubarak's regime and fear that they will dominate the coming government, just as they have the current interim one they appointed months ago.

The military says it will hand over power only after presidential elections, which it has vaguely said will be held in late 2012 or early 2013. The protesters are demanding an immediate move to civilian rule.

"What does it mean, transfer power in 2013? It means simply that he wants to hold on to his seat," said a young protester, Mohammed Sayyed, referring to the head of the Supreme Council, Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi.

Sayyed held two rocks, ready to throw, as he took cover from tear gas in a side street off Tahrir. His head was bandaged from what he said was a rubber bullet that hit him earlier Monday.

"I will keep coming back until they kill me," he said. "The people are frustrated. Nothing changed for the better."

An Egyptian morgue official said the toll had climbed to 24 dead since the violence began Saturday ? a jump from the toll of five dead around nightfall Sunday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the numbers. Hundreds have been injured, according to doctors in the square.

At the makeshift field clinics around Tahrir Square, medical volunteers rushed between injured protesters staggering in, or being carried in by comrades. Most of the clinics were simply a partitioned-off sections of sidewalk.

Mohammed Mustafa, a doctor at the main clinic set up inside a nearby mosque, said his site alone was treating an average of 80 cases an hour and that many of the wounded did not want to be taken to hospital because they feared arrest. He and other doctors said most of the injured had breathing and eye problems and wounds to the face from rubber bullets. A number of protesters have lost eyes from rubber bullet hits since Saturday.

During the overnight assault, police hit one of the field clinics with heavy barrages of tear gas, forcing the staff to flee, struggling to carry out the wounded. Some were moved to a nearby sidewalk outside a Hardees fast food restaurant. A video posted on social networking sites showed a soldier dragging the motionless body of a protester along the street and leaving him in a garbage-strewn section of Tahrir.

As the violence raged, the military council issued a long-awaited anti-graft law that bans anyone convicted of corruption from running for office or holding a government post.

The timing of the move suggested it was an attempt to placate protesters. But the law falls far short of demands by many that all members of Mubarak's former ruling party be banned from politics.

The interim government also said Monday it was seeking to replace culture minister Emad Abu Ghazi, who submitted his resignation Sunday to protest the Cabinet's response to Tahrir clashes, MENA reported.

Protesters also marched Monday other cities, including thousands of students in the coastal city of Alexandria. calling for those responsible for the violence in Cairo to be punished.

The protesters' suspicions about the military were fed by a proposal issued by the military-appointed Cabinet last week that would shield the armed forces from any civilian oversight and give the generals veto power over legislation dealing with military affairs. It would also give them considerable power over the body that is to be created after the election to draft a new constitution.

At the same time, there are deep concerns the election will bring little democratic change. Many worry that stalwarts of Mubarak's ruling party could win a significant number of seats in the next parliament because the military did not ban them from running for public office as requested by activists.

Many also believe that whoever wins the election, the military will continue to wield its domination over the next government. The current civilian government has been little more than a facade for the military, activists say. It has done little to bring about economic and political reform and has stood unable ? or unwilling ? to act as woes have mounted in Egypt.

On Monday, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle called on Egypt's rulers to listen to the protesters.

"Those in charge in Egypt would be well advised to take people's political demands and justified concerns seriously and act fast to create the right environment for the upcoming elections," Westerwelle said.

He called on all sides to refrain from violence so the upcoming election can be held in "a peaceful environment" and dispatched his Middle East envoy to Cairo.

Over recent months, security around the country has fallen apart, with increased crime, sectarian violence and tribal disputes. The economy has badly deteriorated. Because of the weekend violence, Egypt's main stock index fell for a second straight day Monday, and airport officials reported a sharp drop Monday in international passenger arrivals ? a further blow to the country's crucial tourism industry, which is one of the top foreign currency earners.

One of the most prominent democracy proponents in the country, Nobel Peace laureate Mohamed ElBaradei, called on the civilian government to resign and for a national unity government to be formed "grouping all the factions so it can begin to solve the problems of Egyptians."

"Power is now in the hands of the military council, which is not qualified to run the country, and the government, which has no authority," he said on a TV political talk show late Sunday. For the next six months, "we want see the powers of the military council given completely to a civilian, national unity government, and the military goes back to just defending the borders."

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces issued a statement Sunday night, saying it does not intend to "extend the transitional period and will not permit by any means hindering the process of democratic transition."

The military-backed Cabinet said the elections, due to start on Nov. 28, will go ahead as scheduled.

Activists have been holding occasional protests against the military in Tahrir for months, and some have triggered crackdowns by the military or police.

This weekend's violence was the most sustained fighting between the two sides. It began when security forces stormed a sit-in at Tahrir staged by several hundred protesters wounded in clashes during the 18-day uprising in January and February and frustrated by the slow pace of bringing those responsible to justice.

"The people had a revolution to live a better life, but look at everything," said 47-year-old Fayez Mohammed, his eyes red from tear gas. He pointed to rising prices, street violence and lack of accountability against members of Mubarak's regime.

"Our main demand is a date. When are you leaving power?" he said. "And don't say, 'Whenever God wills.'"
