Lange 'thinking about' returning to 'Horror Story'

By Ted Casablanca, E! Online

The bey-otch is back!

Well, probably. At least that was what Jessica Lange -- Best Female Actor in a Drama Series winner at last night's SAG Awards--alluded to when we asked her whether she'd be returning to "American Horror Story" for season two:

READ: The 'American Horror Story House' Is on the Market for How Much?

"I'm thinking about it," she told us backstage.

Which is still far too coy for our liking ... but much more encouraging than the blanket "I don't know" Ms. Lange dished out after nabbing a trophy at the Golden Globes.

Because now we know that Ryan Murphy has already asked her to return. And, let's be honest, it would have been criminal for him not to -- Lange only stole every scene she was featured in during season one.

"As we talked about at the Globes, there just isn't it any better writing out there," Jessica gushed to us.

Then it'd be absolutely insane for the award season's scream queen to jump ship now, eh? We're putting good money on the fact that we'll see Constance (or, likely, some fab new character played by Jessica) in season two.

PHOTOS: 2012 SAG Awards: Winners!

But don't expect more horror out of Jessica after Murphy's boob-tube sensation:

When we asked whether she would consider doing the ghouls and ghosts thing on the big screen, Lange quickly informed us: "I think I'm done with the genre after this."?

Are you thrilled that Jessica will probably be back on "American Horror Story"? Or are you worried that it'll be impossible to top the delicious evilness of Constance, and they should just leave well enough alone? Tell us on our Facebook page!

RIM committee stresses importance of independent chair (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? A review of Research In Motions' leadership structure by a committee of independent directors has concluded that no future chief executive or other employee can be chairperson of the BlackBerry maker.

The panel's findings were published on RIM's website late on Monday, a day before a Jan 31 deadline.

The committee said in its report that it had recommended that RIM should separate the roles of Chair and CEO and amend the board mandate accordingly.

On January 22, the company appointed Barbara Stymiest, who formerly served as a member of Royal Bank of Canada's Group Executive, as independent board chair.

Company investors led by Northwest & Ethical Investments LP had demanded that RIM name an independent chairman, a role previously shared by co-Chief Executive Officers Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, to ensure the board acted independently of management.

Lazaridis and Balsillie stepped down just over a week ago but will remain on the board.

Newbie Apple engineers tasked with working on fake products (Yahoo! News)

Can't wait for that latest and greatest?rumored Apple product to hit the shelves? You could be waiting a while ? not all products being worked on by?Apple engineers are real.

It was revealed at a?LinkedIn event with Adam Lashinsky, author of the book?Inside Apple, that?one of Apple's senior engineers worked on "fake products" for "the first part of his career." The fake projects serve as a test of sorts ? they're to make sure the prospective employee can be trusted enough to work on a secret project for?the world's most valuable brand.

The head fake is just one of the many rites of passage required to gain full acceptance within the "homogeneous" Apple culture. Applicants at the company need to interview for as long as 9 months to gain the trust needed to earn a job.

Russia backs Assad, last friend in Arab world (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russia's defiance of international efforts to end Syrian President Bashar Assad's crackdown on protests is rooted in a calculation that it can keep a Mideast presence by propping up its last remaining ally in the region ? and has nothing to lose if it fails.

The Kremlin has put itself in conflict with the West as it shields Assad's regime from United Nations sanctions and continues to provide it with weapons even as others impose arms embargoes.

But Moscow's relations with Washington are already strained amid controversy over U.S. missile defense plans and other disputes. And Prime Minister Vladimir Putin seems eager to defy the U.S. as he campaigns to reclaim the presidency in March elections.

"It would make no sense for Russia to drop its support for Assad," said Ruslan Pukhov, head of the independent Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies. "He is Russia's last remaining ally in the Middle East, allowing it to preserve some influence in the region."

Moscow may also hope that Assad can hang on to power with its help and repay Moscow with more weapons contracts and other lucrative deals.

And observers note that even as it has nothing to lose from backing Assad, it has nothing to gain from switching course and supporting the opposition.

"Russia has crossed the Rubicon," said Igor Korotchenko, head of the Center for Analysis of Global Weapons Trade.

He said Russia will always be marked as the patron of the Assad regime regardless of the conflict's outcome, so there's little incentive to build bridges with the protesters. The U.N. estimates that more than 5,400 people have been killed since the uprising began in March.

"Russia will be seen as the dictator's ally. If Assad's regime is driven from power, it will mean an end to Russia's presence," said Fyodor Lukyanov, editor of the magazine Russia in Global Affairs.

Syria has been Moscow's top ally in the Middle East since Soviet times, when it was led by the incumbent's father, Hafez Assad. The Kremlin saw it as a bulwark for countering U.S. influence in the region and heavily armed Syria against Israel.

While Russia's relations with Israel have improved greatly since the Soviet collapse, ties with Damascus helped Russia retain its clout as a member of the Quartet of international mediators trying to negotiate peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

After Bashar Assad succeeded his father in 2000, Russia sought to boost ties by agreeing to annul 73 percent of Syria's Soviet-era debt. In the mid-2000s, Putin said Russia would re-establish its place in the Mideast via "the Syria route."

Syria's port of Tartus is now the only naval base Russia has outside the former Soviet Union. A Russian navy squadron made a call there this month in what was seen by many as a show of support for Assad.

For decades, Syria has been a major customer for the Russian arms industries, buying billions of dollars' worth of combat jets, missiles, tanks and other heavy weapons. And unlike some other nations, such as Venezuela, which obtained Russian weapons on Kremlin loans, Assad's regime paid cash.

The respected newspaper Kommersant reported this week that Syria has ordered 36 Yak-130 combat jets worth $550 million. The deal, which officials wouldn't confirm or deny, may signal preparations for even bigger purchases of combat planes.

Korotchenko said Syria needs the jets to train its pilots to fly the advanced MiG-29M or MiG-35 fighter jets it wants to purchase: "It's a precursor of future deals."

Korotchenko said Syria's importance as a leading importer of Russian weapons in the region grew after the loss of the lucrative Iraqi and Libyan markets.

Russia, whose abstention in a U.N. vote cleared the way for military intervention in Libya, later voiced frustration with what it described as a disproportional use of force by NATO.

The Kremlin has vowed not to allow a replay of the Libyan strategy in Syria, warning that it would block any U.N. resolution on Syria lacking a clear ban on any foreign military interference.

Moscow accuses the West of turning a blind eye to shipments of weapons to the Syrian opposition and warns it won't be bound by Western sanctions.

Earlier this month, a Syria-bound Russian ship allegedly carrying tons of munitions was stopped by officials in Cyprus, an EU member, who said it was violating an EU arms embargo. The ship's captain promised to head to Turkey but then made a dash to Syria.

Asked about the ship, Russia's foreign minister bluntly responded that Moscow owes neither explanation nor apology to anyone because it has broken no international rules.

Nonetheless, Moscow has shown restraint in its arms trade with Damascus, avoiding the sales of weapons that could significantly tilt the military balance in the region.

In one example, the Kremlin has turned down Damascus' requests for truck-mounted Iskander missiles that can hit ground targets 280 kilometers (175 miles) away with deadly precision. While the sale of such missiles wouldn't be banned under any international agreements, Moscow has apparently heeded strong U.S. and Israeli objections to such a deal.

Moscow also has stonewalled Damascus' request for the advanced S-300 air defense missile system, only agreeing to sell short-range ground-to-air missiles.

"Russia has taken a very careful and cautious stance on contracts with Syria," Korotchenko said.

The most powerful Russian weapon reportedly delivered to Syria is the Bastion anti-ship missile complex intended to protect its coast. The Bastion is armed with supersonic Yakhont cruise missiles that can sink any warship at a range of 300 kilometers (186 miles) and are extremely difficult to intercept, providing a strong deterrent against any attack from the sea.

Observers in Moscow said that Russia can do little else to help Assad. The chief of the Russian upper house's foreign affairs committee, Mikhail Margelov, openly acknowledged that this week, saying that Russia has "exhausted its arsenal" of means to support Syria by protecting it from the U.N. sanctions.

Lukyanov said Russia has made it clear it would block any attempts to give U.N. cover to any foreign military intervention in Syria, but wouldn't be able to prevent Syria's neighbors from mounting such action.

"Russia realizes that it has limited opportunities and can't play a decisive role," he said.

Pukhov also predicted that Russia wouldn't take any stronger moves in support for Damascus.

"Going further would mean an open confrontation with the West, and Russia doesn't need that," he said.

Ex-'SYTYCD' choreographer jailed for rape

By Josh Grossberg, E! Online

Now this is what we call facing the music.

Alex Da Silva, former choreographer of Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance," was handed a 10-year prison sentence Friday for raping a female student and assaulting another and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

MORE from E!: So You Think You Can Dance Choreographer Alex Da Silva: Guilty of Rape, Assault

Last September, a Los Angeles jury convicted Da Silva, 43, of the forcible rape of a 22-year-old woman in August 2002 and assaulting a 25-year-old protg with the intent to rape in March 2009 -- part of a series of shocking charges alleging the salsa expert sexually assaulted four different women during private lessons over a six-year period between 2003 and 2009.

However, the panel deadlocked on four other counts, including an additional charge from the March 2009 attack and the alleged rapes of two other women in 2004 and 2005.

Had he been found guilty of those other charges, the Latin dance instructor could've been jailed for life.

RELATED E! story: Shocker! SYTYCD Choreographer Shane Sparks Busted for Child Molestation

While meting out his punishment, L.A. Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy formally dismissed those counts today. She also chastized Da Silva in court, saying he "does not respect women" and "believes he is entitled to do whatever he wants when he wants."

The Brazilian native was originally arrested in August 2009, following a police probe into criminal complaints that alleged he lured four female victims to private one-on-one lessons he conducted in his North Hollywood home and then raped them.

Michelle Obama reports for campaign duty (Daily Caller)

Michelle Obama is playing a growing role in her husband?s reelection campaign, partly as a fundraiser, but especially as a cheerleader for her husband?s?female supporters.

The first lady attended at least two Jan. 26 fundraisers in Florida, where she ticked off a list of the president?s progressive accomplishments, promised more government intervention and ended with urgent appeals for audiences to join the campaign, according to the White House transcripts of her remarks.

Roughly 250 people paid a minimum of $500 to attend a lunchtime fundraiser in Sarasota, according to the transcript.

MRS. OBAMA: ?So let me ask you one final question:? Are you in?

AUDIENCE:? Yes!

MRS. OBAMA: Wait. Are you in?

AUDIENCE:? Yes!

MRS. OBAMA:? Because I am so in.? (Laughter.)? I am so very in.

Prior to the 2010 mid-term election blowout, the first lady played only a minor role in her husband?s campaign plans. But her role has increased markedly since then.

Mrs. Obama has attended 17 fundraisers organized by the Democratic National Committee since June 2011, including five in Florida, three in California, and others in Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Illinois and Louisiana.

On Jan. 11 she attended two campaign fundraisers in Virginia on the same day that the president hosted one in their home town of Chicago.

Next week she is slated for a California trip, where she will attend two fundraisers and appear on two television shows. One is Jay Leno?s ?Tonight Show,? and the other is ?The Ellen DeGeneres Show,? whose host is a vocal supporter of the president.

The first lady has also appeared at more events that showcase her non-political role in Washington. Since November, for example, she has headlined a ?Toys for Tots? drive, a job fair, several events for soldiers and their families, a trouble-free appearance on the iCarly kids? TV show and a quick appearance at a NASCAR rally.

Mrs. Obama is well-regarded by most Americans but engenders animosity in some, owing to the anonymous but corroborated tales about her clashes with White House officials including former chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and former press secretary Robert Gibbs.

For example, in a Marist poll of 1,042 registered voters in October,?63 percent had a positive impression of her while just 21 percent had an unfavorable view. Her support among Democratic women, especially African-American women, is likely far higher.

Thursday?s trip included two fundraisers at expensive mansions in Palm Beach and Sarasota, plus a public event at a Tampa supermarket that featured a Hispanic food company and an audience that included numerous Hispanic and African-American children.

The trip put the first lady, and her politically correct healthy-food campaign, on Florida TV alongside the increasingly aggressive and hard-nosed GOP primary candidates.

She pushed a very ambitious progressive agenda at both fundraisers, arguing that university-trained professionals in government should protect people from corporate executives and from their own mistakes in the free market.

?We know that in this country we rise and we fall together. ? We know that if we make the right choices, if we have the right priorities, we can ensure that everyone ? everyone ? gets a fair shake and everyone has a chance to get ahead,? she told her Sarasota audience.

The Palm Beach event was held at the $40 million Palm Beach home of Howard and Michele Kessler, who are major contributors to Democratic causes.

The Sarasota event was held at the ocean-view home of Richard and Caren Lobo. He?s a former chairman of the Florida Public Broadcasting Service and CEO of the PBS station that serves Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota.

She told similar stories about President Obama to both audiences.

?Barack has a memory like a steel trap. ? If he?s had a few minutes with you and a decent conversation, he might not remember your name but he will never forget your story. ??That is where Barack gets his passion.? That is where he gets his toughness and his fight.?

She also tried out a few cautious jokes, telling her Sarasota audience that ?we all know that this isn?t just about one extraordinary man ? although I admit I?m a little biased.? I think he?s kind of cute.?

But at both events, she amped up her appeal for support and help.

?We don?t have time,? she told the Palm Beach audience of 140 donors. ?We need you fired up and ready to go and ready to make it happen. ? So I am counting on seeing all of you out there, doing whatever it is you do best ? taking your neighbors and shaking them a little bit. (Laughter.) Going to church and making sure people are registered to vote.? Yelling from the rooftops.? Pulling women aside ? just shaking them. (Laughter.) We need you.?

That?s a much stronger appeal than what she offered donors at a Pasadena mansion last June. ?I hope that you all are ready to go ? (applause) ? because it is going to take all of our energy to keep moving towards the future,? she told the wealthy California audience.

It was also stronger than her September pitch to a lunchtime fundraiser in Cape Elizabeth, Maine: ?We are going to work our butts off to make this right.? So we need you behind us.? Thank you so much, Maine.? Thank you.? Let?s get going!? Let?s get to work!?

The Palm Beach audience got the same urgent appeal as the Sarasota donors, some 10 months before her husband stands for re-election amid economic uncertainty and a growing portfolio of White House scandals.

?This is going to be hard,? Mrs. Obama said. ?We can?t take anything for granted and we need everyone ? every single one of you ? to be laser-focused, creating those smart women. Right? (Applause.) Building up that base. Telling people the truth of who this president is and what he?s done for so many across the country and around the world. ? We have to get it done.?

Harper eyes 'major transformations' to Canada

DAVOS, Switzerland ? Prime Minister Stephen Harper signalled his government will bring forward "major transformations" to the country in the coming months ? in areas such as the retirement pension system, immigration, science and technology investment and the energy sector.

Of those reforms, Harper said, getting a grip on slowing the rising costs of the country's pension system is particularly critical.

In the wake of Harper's speech, it now appears the Conservative government could be poised to gradually change the Old Age Security system so that the age of eligibility is raised to 67 from 65.

The opposition NDP and Liberals said that such a move would financially cripple millions of Canadians, and that at a time when world leaders were talking about addressing income inequality, the prime minister's words indicated the opposite may happen in Canada.

Harper made the revelations in a major keynote speech Thursday at the World Economic Forum, the annual gathering of the world's political and business elite.

As expected, the prime minister was critical of Europe and the United States for not adequately dealing with the economic problems that have gripped them in recent months and years.

But it was Harper's assessment of the major changes that lie ahead for Canada that stood out in the speech.

"In the months to come, our government will undertake major transformations to position Canada for growth over the next generation," said Harper.

The Conservative government will table a budget in the coming weeks that is expected to set the stage for years of deficit-slashing and government reform.

"Under our government, Canada will make the transformations necessary to sustain economic growth, job creation and prosperity now and for the next generation," said Harper.

He said that means two things: "Making better economic choices now. And preparing ourselves now for the demographic pressures the Canadian economy faces."

Harper said the country's aging population has become a backdrop for his concern about how to keep the country strong over the long term.

"If not addressed promptly, this has the capacity to undermine Canada's economic position and, for that matter, that of all western nations well beyond the current economic crises."

Indeed, Harper said the country's demographics ? an aging population and a dwindling workforce ? constitute "a threat to the social programs and services that Canadians cherish."

For that reason, he said his government will "be taking measures in the coming months."

Harper did not specify what those measures will be, but he said they are necessary ? not just to bring the government's finances back to a balanced budget in the medium term, "but also to ensure the sustainability of our social programs and fiscal position over the next generation."

"We have already taken steps to limit the growth of our health-care spending over that period," said Harper. "We must do the same for our retirement income system."

Harper said the centrepiece of the public pension system ? the Canada Pension Plan ? is fully funded, actuarially sound and does not need to be changed.

But he added: "For those elements of the system that are not funded, we will make the changes necessary to ensure sustainability for the next generation while not affecting current recipients."

So far, the government has come forward with a plan to create a private pooled pension system to encourage Canadians to prepare for their retirement.

Still, there are concerns that as baby boomers approach retirement, the cost to government of providing public pensions will skyrocket.

In December, the National Post reported that there was internal debate within the government about increasing the age of eligibility for the other major element of the public pension scheme ? Old Age Security ? to 67 from 65.

Internal government documents project the cost of the OAS system will climb from $36.5 billion in 2010 to $48 billion in 2015. By 2030 ? when the number of seniors is expected to climb to 9.3 million from 4.7 million now ? the cost of the program could reach $108 billion.

NDP finance critic Peter Julian, speaking to reporters in Ottawa, called Harper's speech "ominous words because we don't have any details yet."

Julian said the NDP wants to see the government increase spending on the OAS by $700 million per year, which the NDP says would make the system sustainable, rather than tell seniors they have to work for two more years before they can retire.

"That's completely unacceptable. If he had run on that platform last May, he wouldn't have the numbers he has in the House he has today," Julian said.

The NDP and the Liberals said that increasing funding to the OAS could be financed by reigning in spending on prisons and the F-35 fighter jet, which could cost anywhere between $16 billion and $30 billion, depending on who you ask.

"If he's serious about the demographic shift, he should listen to evidence and invest in hospital beds, not prison beds," said Liberal critic Scott Brison.

Brison said the government should make tax credits refundable for those in the lowest income brackets to help address income inequality in Canada.

"It would be a very regressive step to cut or restrict OAS at a time when income inequality is growing issue," Brison told Postmedia News.

"Harper isn't addressing income inequality. He's proposing changes that would make it worse."

The challenge to the government will now be selling whatever changes it plans to the pension system, something which has dogged previous prime ministers, said Errol Mendes, a politics experts from the University of Ottawa.

Brian Mulroney, months into his mandate, controversially decided to de-index pensions. After a senior confronted him, Mulroney backed away from the plan.

"I bet you (Harper) won't talk about the OAS over here because there will be pictures of that woman saying 'Goodbye Charlie' to Brian Mulroney," said Mendes, referring to the famous 1986 encounter.

Harper issued a scathing criticism of countries in the developed world, which he suggested had forgotten about the importance of creating economic growth.

"Is it the case that, in the developed world, too many of us have in fact become complacent about our prosperity?" Harper asked.

He suggested that developed countries had taken wealth "as a given . . . assuming it is somehow the natural order of things."

As a result, he said, countries in the western world had become focused primarily "on our services and entitlements."

As a result, he said, it's not surprising that, in addition to banks facing debt, countries themselves were also facing sovereign debt crises.

The problem, he suggested, could be "too much general willingness to have standards and benefits beyond our ability, or even willingness, to pay for them."

Harper warned that the wealth of western economies "is no more inevitable than the poverty of emerging ones."

He said the problems afflicting Europe and the U.S. threaten to become even more serious in future.

"Each nation has a choice to make. Western nations, in particular, face a choice of whether to create the conditions for growth and prosperity, or to risk long-term economic decline."

The solution, he said, is for countries to make the sometimes tough, but correct, decisions now.

"Easy choices now mean fewer choices later."

Among the other priorities Prime Minister Stephen Harper signalled where change is coming:

- Energy

The Conservative government will make it a "national priority" to ensure the country has the "capacity to export our energy products beyond the United States, and specifically to Asia."

"In this regard, we will soon take action to ensure that major energy and mining projects are not subject to unnecessary regulatory delays ? that is, delay merely for the sake of delay."

Harper did not explain what he has planned, although he and Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver have complained that foreign-backed "radical" opponents of the $5.5-billion Northern Gateway project have threatened to slow down hearings by the National Energy Board.

- Immigration

"We will ensure that, while we respect our humanitarian obligations and family reunification objectives, we make our economic and labour force needs the central goal of our immigration efforts in the future."

- Science

The government will continue to make "key investments in science and technology" that are necessary to sustain a "modern competitive economy."

"But we believe that Canada's less-than-optimal results for those investments is a significant problem for our country."

- Trade

Harper expects to complete negotiations on a Canada-European Union free-trade agreement this year.

Furthermore, he said, his government is also committed to completing negotiations for a free-trade deal with India by the end of 2013.

And Canada will begin talks to become a member of the Trans-Pacific Partnership while also pursuing opportunities to trade in the emerging market of Asia.

Obama to propose tax credit for natural gas trucks (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama was set on Thursday to promote a plan for greater use of natural gas and open up more land for offshore drilling during a campaign-style tour aimed at shoring up confidence in his economic stewardship.

At a stop in Las Vegas, Nevada, Obama will seek to counter Republican criticisms of his energy policies by rolling out a proposal to offer tax incentives for companies to buy natural gas trucks, which would help build demand for abundant supplies of the fuel.

In his State of the Union address on Tuesday, Obama acknowledged the nation's booming natural gas sector, which has grown dramatically in recent years as advances in technology have unlocked vast new reserves.

Obama will talk up the idea during a visit to a UPS facility in Las Vegas, which received stimulus funding to invest in liquefied natural gas vehicles and construct a public LNG refueling station.

"We think that we're going to be looking at 600,000 jobs in natural gas extraction here in the United States and all the industries that come with it," Obama said in an interview with Univision on Wednesday in Arizona.

The president was also to visit Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, Colorado, where the Air Force was installing a one-megawatt solar panel system, and where last year it test-piloted jets that run on advanced biofuels.

Obama, seeing some improvement in his poll numbers, is touring five states after his combative State of the Union address in which he took aim at income inequality and also announced new proposals on manufacturing, student loans and energy.

But his effort to keep a spotlight on his policy prescriptions suffered a setback on Wednesday when a tense encounter in Arizona with Republican Governor Jan Brewer grabbed headlines and dented his hopes of portraying himself as above the partisan fray.

A CLEAN ALTERNATIVE?

Using domestic natural gas as a "clean" alternative to importing foreign oil has been heavily promoted by Texas oil billionaire T. Boone Pickens and has attracted support from both sides of the aisle in Congress.

Still, Obama's proposal, which would need Congressional approval, could face an uphill battle to make it into law, with Republicans offering more resistance to costly energy subsidies.

Similar measures aimed at expanding tax breaks for natural gas vehicles have failed to break through partisan gridlock, and conservative groups have opposed such legislation on the grounds that government should not be in the business of picking winners and losers in the energy sector.

Republicans have hammered Obama on his energy policies, and were enraged over his decision to block the Keystone pipeline, which they say would have created jobs and reduced dependence on oil from the Middle East.

Increasing domestic natural gas consumption would benefit drillers, as U.S. natural gas prices have fallen sharply because of the growing glut and the relatively warm winter.

Producers such as Chesapeake Energy are cutting output in the face of the weakest gas prices in 10 years.

Obama was also expected to announce that the Interior Department will hold the last scheduled offshore lease sale of the government's current five-year drilling plan in June, offering 38 million acres for development in central Gulf of Mexico.

The department held its first offshore lease sale since the massive BP oil spill in December, with companies successfully bidding more than $337 million for rights to drill in the Gulf.

Analysts said those results were a sign that drilling is rebounding in the Gulf after the administration temporarily shut down deepwater exploration after the BP disaster.

Still, oil and gas industry backers have complained that the administration has hindered drilling through slow permitting and a raft of new rules implemented since the 2010 oil spill.

Limiting protein or certain amino acids before surgery may reduce risk of surgical complications

Limiting protein or certain amino acids before surgery may reduce risk of surgical complications

Thursday, January 26, 2012

Limiting certain essential nutrients for several days before surgery?either protein or amino acids?may reduce the risk of serious surgical complications such as heart attack or stroke, according to a new Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) study.

The study appears in the January 25, 2012 issue of Science Translational Medicine.

"Food restriction as a way to increase stress resistance may seem counterintuitive, but in fact our data indicate that the well-fed state is the one more susceptible to this kind of injury," said James Mitchell, assistant professor of genetics and complex diseases at HSPH.

The researchers, led by Mitchell and Wei Peng, a former HSPH postdoctoral fellow, analyzed two groups of mice. One group was allowed to eat normally for 6 to 14 days; the other group was given a diet free of protein or lacking a single amino acid (amino acids are the building blocks of proteins). Both groups were then subjected to surgical stress that could potentially harm the kidneys or liver. In the mice that were allowed to eat as usual, about 40 percent died. The protein- and amino acid-free mice all survived.

The researchers also found that removing the gene that senses levels of any type of amino acid eliminated the protective effect. This suggests that the pathway activated by amino acid deficiency?rather than the absence of any particular amino acid?is responsible for the observed benefits, and opens up the potential for targeting drugs toward that pathway.

The results are significant because they pinpoint protein as an important substance to eliminate from the diet before surgery to avoid complications. Stroke risk related to cardiovascular surgery ranges from 0.8% to 9.7%, depending on the procedure. Heart attack risk is 3% to 4%.

In numerous animal studies over the past few decades, scientists have found that long-term dietary restriction can improve health and lengthen life. Benefits include increased stress resistance, reduced inflammation, improved blood sugar regulation, and better cardiovascular health?and many of these benefits extend to humans. There is debate, however, about whether the benefits stem from the source of the calories (fat, sugar, or protein) or simply the total calories. Recent research on fruit flies demonstrated the benefits of restricting protein. The HSPH study aimed to provide further clarity by determining the benefits of protein or amino acid restriction in rodents.

As a next step, Mitchell and his colleagues will try to determine whether dietary preconditioning works as well lowering surgery-related risk in humans as it did in mice. They have taken early planning steps with colleagues at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston on a clinical trial of patients on protein-free diets before surgery. If the benefits are confirmed in humans, it may be possible to perform surgeries with significantly reduced risk of complications.

(AP) ? Hip-hop is making itself heard ? and seen ? at the Sundance Film Festival.

Along with a slew of performances by rappers and DJs around town, this year's festival includes documentary and narrative films about hip-hop culture.

"It's a beautiful thing to see," said Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew fame, who stars in a short film playing at the festival called "The Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke." ''When you look at the success of Ice Cube and Will Smith, these are traditional hip-hop guys that are very successful in the movie business, so it's a great thing and I'm happy for all the other guys who are here."

Rapper-actor Ice-T made his directorial debut at Sundance with the documentary "Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap," which features interviews with hip-hop artists such as Grandmaster Flash, Eminem, Mos Def, KRS-One, Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube.

Ice-T said he made the movie to give viewers "a better understanding of what it takes and what we do."

"I wanted to talk about the craft, not the cars, the money, the girls," the 53-year-old entertainer said. "How do you write rhymes? Let's go into the songwriting process. And everybody was really excited because they were like, 'Nobody ever asks us that.'"

After interviewing his friends and colleagues on both coasts, Ice-T ended up with a four-hour film that he trimmed down to 106 minutes for festival consideration.

"Our only ambition was to make it to Sundance," he said. "This is a festival about art, and this movie's about art."

Another film with a hip-hop focus is dramatic-competition contender "Filly Brown." The film starring Lou Diamond Phillips, Edward James Olmos and newcomer Gina Rodriguez tells the story of a rising Hispanic hip-hop star and the challenges she faces on the way to fame.

"Hip-hop, the soul of hip-hop and the foundation of hip-hop is just staying true to who you are and your voice, and so I think it's really nice that the Sundance films are reflecting that," said Rodriguez, who raps on screen.

"We didn't set out to make a hip-hop movie," added co-director Youssef Delara. "We set out to tell the story of this young woman in music, and it's just like hip-hop is so ingrained in our culture, and a lot of different types of culture, that you really can't tell a youth story without some element of hip-hop."

The Sundance Institute Film Music Program hosted a concert at the ASCAP Music Cafe featuring Ice-T, Chuck D of Public Enemy and rap pioneer Grandmaster Caz.

"Every year the films are so wonderful here and so diverse, and they keep adding new elements and experiences to the festival to keep it current and fresh," said Loretta Munoz, producer of the ASCAP Music Cafe. "I'm very happy about 'The Art of Rap' and seeing how that goes forward."

In addition to the films and official music programs, various corporate-sponsored locations held their own parties with big-name rap stars.

Common, a star and producer of "LUV," a contender in the U.S. dramatic competition, celebrated the film by performing into the wee hours at the Express afterparty. Drake and Wiz Khalifa each took the stage at the Bing Bar, and Drake also hosted a gathering at Park City Live, where Ludacris headlined earlier in the week.

Lil Jon took to the turntables at the Skullcandy Compound above a massive disco ball and Kendrick Lamar inspired the crowd to sing along at Sugar nightclub on Main Street, where Nas is set to perform Friday.

"Hip-hop changed the world," Ice-T said. "I'm amazed it took so long to get here."

(AP) ? Netflix regained 600,000 U.S. customers in the fourth quarter as the video subscription service began to recover from a revolt against a big price increase.

Figures released Wednesday show Netflix Inc. ended December with 24.4 million subscribers in the U.S. That was up from 23.8 million at the end of September.

The subscriber uptick is a positive sign for Netflix after several months of upheaval that battered its stock. Netflix lost 800,000 subscribers last summer after raising its U.S. prices by as much as 60 percent.

The fallout contributed to a 14 percent decrease in Netflix's fourth-quarter earnings.

Netflix made $40.7 million, or 73 cents per share, in the final three months of last year. That compares with income of $47.1 million, or 87 cents per share, a year earlier.

Investors had been bracing for a bigger drop-off. The company's performance easily exceeded the average earnings estimate of 54 cents per share among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Fourth-quarter revenue climbed 47 percent from the previous year to $876 million ? $19 million above analyst projections.

Netflix's stock soared $11.63, or more than 12 percent, to $106.67 in extended trading. During the regular session, it increased $2.37, up 2.6 percent.

The stock still has a long way to go to return to its peak of nearly $305, which was reached in July, around the same time that Netflix announced the price increase that outraged customers.

But the fourth-quarter results should help bolster confidence in Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, who had been lambasted for miscalculating how subscribers would react to the higher prices.

Hastings had promised Netflix would work to lure back customers, and the fourth-quarter gains were even better than he had forecast.

IAEA checks Japan reactor pending safety approval

(AP) ? Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency on Thursday began their first inspection of a Japanese nuclear power plant that has undergone official "stress tests" ? a key step required to restart dozens of nuclear plants idled in the wake of the Fukushima crisis.

A 10-member IAEA team was inspecting the No. 3 and No. 4 reactors at the Ohi nuclear power plant in Fukui, western Japan, where there is a string of reactors.

"We look forward to seeing the types of specifications and types of improvements that Kansai Electric Power Co. has made at the Ohi nuclear plant," mission leader James Lyons said at the outset of the plant visit. "Because that would give us opportunity to see how nuclear utilities are responding to these instructions."

The inspection comes a week after Japanese nuclear safety officials gave preliminary approval on the Ohi reactors, a step closer to restarting them.

Authorities have required all reactors to undergo stress tests in the wake of Fukushima nuclear crisis and make necessary modifications to improve safety. The stress tests, similar to those used in France and elsewhere in Europe, are designed to assess how well the plants can withstand earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, loss of power and other crises.

Another hurdle will be gaining local approval for the plants to restart, required after regular 13-month inspections.

Only four of Japan's 54 reactors are currently operating, and if no idled plants get approval to go back on line, the country will be without an operating reactor by the end of April.

Public concerns about the safety of nuclear power have grown after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami knocked out the vital cooling system at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, sending three of its reactors to meltdowns and releasing massive radiation into the environment.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has promised to reduce Japan's reliance on nuclear power over time and plans to lay out a new energy policy by the summer. But the nation obtained about 30 percent of its electricity from nuclear power before the crisis, and it could face power shortages if it cannot get more nuclear plants back on line soon.

Some experts have been critical of the stress tests, saying they are meaningless because they have no clear criteria. They also say that the government's simulations of crises based on a single event are not realistic because disasters often occur in a string of events.

Egypt's ruler partially lifts emergency laws (AP)

CAIRO ? Egypt's military ruler on Tuesday decreed a partial lifting of the nation's hated emergency laws, an apparent attempt to ease criticism of his policies ahead of the first anniversary of the popular uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak.

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi said in a televised address that the draconian laws, in force for more than three decades, would be lifted effective Wednesday but would remain applicable to crimes committed by "thugs." The military has often labeled organizers of anti-government demonstrations "thugs."

Tantawi's decision to partially lift the emergency laws, which give police far-reaching powers, would likely not satisfy rights groups that have been campaigning for their total removal.

Rights groups say at least 12,000 civilians have been tried before military tribunals since the military council took power. Many of them, they say, were charged with acts of "thuggery" when, in fact, they were protesters.

The term also has been used to ridicule the military in the independent press, and some of the young protesters in recent demonstrations have been chanting, "we are thugs!" At least 80 protesters have been killed by troops since October.

To mark the anniversary, the rulers pledged to release more than 1,900 people who were tried in military courts. The release was set for Wednesday morning.

In another apparent good will gesture, blogger Maikel Nabil Sanad was freed Tuesday. He was arrested in March and sentenced by a military court to three years in prison over his criticism of the military's use of violence against protesters.

Tantawi and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces he chairs took power when an 18-day uprising forced Mubarak to step down on Feb. 11, 2011.

To mark the anniversary Wednesday, protesters are expected to take to the streets to call on the military to immediately step down and to demand retribution for hundreds of protesters killed by Mubarak's security forces or at the hands of troops in subsequent clashes.

"I'm here for the rights of martyrs. A year has passed and nothing has changed," protester Mohammed Khalil said he sat in a tent he erected Tuesday night at Tahrir Square, birthplace of the anti-Mubarak uprising and the main venue of Wednesday's protests.

Khalil was one of several thousand protesters who gathered at Tahrir Square Tuesday night, erecting tents and building podiums in preparation for Wednesday's demonstrations.

Tantawi was Mubarak's defense minister for some 20 years, during which he was known to be unquestioningly loyal to the ousted leader. He and the other generals, according to activists, remain beholden to Mubarak, whose approval was essential for their promotion through the ranks.

Mubarak ruled for 29 years, and the emergency laws were in force throughout.

The activists behind Mubarak's ouster accuse the ruling generals of bungling the transition, large scale human rights violations and the use of excessive and sometime deadly force against peaceful protesters.

Last month, video clips showing troops brutally beating protesters and stomping on them while they lay on the ground created an uproar. The images tainted the military's reputation as the nation's chief protector and its most powerful institution.

One video in particular of a woman stripped half naked and beaten and stomped on by troops touched a raw nerve in Egypt's conservative society and prompted a rare protest by women to condemn the military.

For their part, the generals have accused some of the pro-democracy groups of following a "foreign agenda."

On Tuesday, a sullen faced Tantawi, who is in his 70s, renewed past pledges that the military would return to the barracks when power is handed to a civilian administration.

In a bid to deflect criticism of the generals' handling of the nation's affairs, Tantawi said the military council consulted with all political forces and "the revolution's youth" and shared responsibility with three Cabinets through the 11 months it has been in power.

Tantawi also called on critics of the military to think again.

"Surely, everyone who criticized the role of the armed forces and its supreme council at one given time must revise his stand," said Tantawi, who along with other generals consistently denied responsibility for killing protesters or blamed unknown "third parties" for the killings. They have often cited unnamed foreign powers as the source of the nation's troubles over the past year.

Tantawi's address came a day after Egypt's first freely elected parliament in decades held its inaugural session, a significant step in the handover process. The election for the 508-seat chamber was held over a six-week period starting Nov. 28. The Islamist-dominated legislature's first priority is to name a 100-member panel to draft a new constitution. The next step would be to put the draft to a vote in a nationwide referendum.

Presidential elections are to be held before the end of June, and the military has said it would return to its barracks when a new president is sworn in.

"The armed forces will be devoted to the its role to protect the nation once the transition period ends. It is a role that it has historically endured," Tantawi said.
