Astronauts to make spacewalk to fix leak

Two astronauts will venture outside the International Space Station Thursday to isolate and repair an ammonia leak in part of the orbiting lab's cooling system.

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and Japanese spaceflyer Akihiko Hoshide are slated to start the spacewalk ? also known as an extra-vehicular activity, or EVA ? Thursday at 8:15 a.m. EDT. They're expected to stay outside for about 6 1/2 hours, NASA officials said. You can watch live coverage of the spacewalk here on NASA TV, beginning at 7:15 a.m. EDT.

Each of the orbiting lab's eight huge solar arrays has its own associated power system, and circulating ammonia helps cool this gear down. The spacewalk's first objective is to find the source of the leak, which could affect one of these power channels if it's not addressed soon.

"We don't know exactly where the leak is," space station manager Mike Suffredini of NASA told reporters during a teleconference on Oct. 26. "It's possible the leak is in the PVR itself, the (photo-voltaic) radiator itself. It could be in the pump system, or it could be in any one of the (coolant) lines." [ Gallery: Building the International Space Station ]

On Thursday's EVA, Williams ? commander of the station's current Expedition 33 mission ? and Hoshide will make their way over to the port side of the station's backbone-like truss. They'll reconfigure some lines in the affected coolant system and install a spare radiator to see if that stops the leak.

"We're real suspicious of the radiator," said spacewalk flight director Mike Lammers of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. "It kind of stretches out there and is susceptible to micrometeorite impacts."

Because the leak is so slow, it will likely take several weeks before it's known if the fix works, officials said.

If ammonia continues to escape, the station's operators will eventually have to try something else. For example, they may direct astronauts to swap out some of the coolant system's pump gear on another spacewalk. But there likely won't be an urgent need for a new fix, since the spare radiator should provide enough ammonia to keep the coolant system operating until next October or so, officials said.

NASA and its space station partners have known about the ammonia leak since 2007, and they've taken measures to deal with it before. Astronauts aboard the space shuttle Endeavour recharged the coolant system with 8 pounds (3.6 kilograms) of ammonia last year.

    1. Moon and Jupiter's celestial treat

Look in the eastern sky the next few nights and you will see a celestial treat. Full moon was Monday, so the waning gibbous moon will be rising a few hours past sunset. Jupiter, a month away from opposition on Dec. 2, will also be rising a few hours past sunset. The result will be a conjunction: a close encounter between two astronomical bodies.

Spacewalks are always challenging, but Thursday's EVA is unlikely to throw anything at Williams and Hoshide that the two astronauts can't handle. In late August and early September, the duo replaced a vital power unit over the course of two spacewalks, defeating an unexpectedly stubborn stuck bolt in the process.

"I would say this is an average-skill-level EVA ? maybe slightly more challenging than an average EVA," said lead spacewalk officer Allison Bolinger of the Johnson Space Center.

91% Holy Motors

"Holy Motors," from French filmmaker Leos Carax, is the best avant-garde film of 2012 so far. But that's not saying much, as it's been a terrible year for avant-garde film. Despite its title, "Holy Motors" really isn't about cars. It's somewhat about technology, with limousines probably meant to represent traditional celluloid cameras -- so big and bulky that they are a challenge to handle. But oh so wonderful. Big wonderful machines. Stretch limos can barely turn a corner in the old sectors of great cities like Paris and New York. But doesn't everyone's heart skip a beat just a bit when they enter one? First and foremost, "Holy Motors" is about people, as was the case with Carax's first film, "Boy Meets Girl" (1984). This is an avant-garde artist with a deep-feeling heart and a deep sensitivity to the people around him. Holy Love. Amen to that. The film documents a day in the life of a man named Oscar. (Perhaps this is a tribute to American cinema and its big, grand Academy Awards. Holy Glamour.) Played spectacularly well by the protean Denis Lavant, Oscar is carted around all day in a white stretch limo, taken to a series of appointments throughout Paris. At each appointment, he becomes a different character. His limo is a dressing room, where he applies make-up and elaborate disguises to become his next character. The first one is an old, crippled woman begging for money on the street. Another is a revolting barefoot troll (half-man, half-beast) who interrupts a high-fashion photo shoot and kidnaps the model (who is played by Eva Mendes). Every sequence is quite thrilling, and each one is so different from the others. Most breathtaking of all is the sequence where his movements are recorded in a stop-motion studio, for use in what appears to be a pornographic video game. Gradually it becomes clear that these appointments are elaborately planned, and everyone he interacts with during each scene is also an actor. While donning his next costume in the limo, he is also reading a file that someone else has prepared, a summary of what his next character will be doing. We even meet a man who appears to be something like Oscar's employer, who critiques Oscar's performances. Oscar announces that he has been having more difficulty staying in character because the cameras have gotten so small that they cannot be seen. This is when "Holy Motors" started to seem like a comment on digital filmmaking. At my screening at the New York Film Festival, Carax was in attendance, as was Kylie Minogue, who has a small role in the film. (I initially thought this was Minogue's first time acting. But not so. She has appeared in a number of television shows and films, including "Moulin Rouge," where she played the Green Fairy. Who knew?) Carax spoke for about a half-hour after the screening, and it became even more clear that "Holy Motors" was primarily meant as an allegory about 21st-century filmmaking and the demise of traditional cameras. At one point, he said the new cameras today are not really cameras. "They're more like computers," he said. He feels sad about the rise of digital filmmaking, claiming that it "looks terrible." But "Holy Motors," which was shot 100% on digital, looked gorgeous. Gradually during his remarks, the object of his ire shifted. What really angers him is that he's been unable to make a film since 1999. He had several projects collapse at the last minute because producers won't back him. This has nothing to do with the 21st century or changing technology. This is the age-old problem of cinema being enormously expensive. If anything, it's gotten easier in the digital age because the new technology costs so much less. It's no surprise to me that Carax finally was able to get a project green-lighted now that digital has triumphed. To me, Carax has digital to thank. Furthermore, I suspect that "Holy Motors" is going to succeed well enough financially that he's going to get another project green-lighted in 2013. Holy Digital. While I appreciate Carax's work and consider myself a fan, I wouldn't put him in my pantheon. There's something still just a bit underwhelming about his work.

Presidential election to pass $2B fundraising mark

(AP) ? The 2012 presidential campaign was expected Thursday to pass the $2 billion mark in fundraising, according to accounting statements submitted to the government, thanks to an outpouring of cash from both ordinary citizens and the wealthiest Americans hoping to influence the selection of the country's next leader.

The eye-popping figure puts this election on track to be the costliest in history, fueled by a campaign finance system vastly altered by the proliferation of "super" political committees that are bankrolling a barrage of TV ads in battleground states.

President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney had brought in more than $1.5 billion through the end of September, according to previous fundraising reports submitted before the final pre-election accounting statements were due Thursday night. Obama hadn't yet disclosed his fundraising for early October, but Romney's campaign said it raised $111.8 million in the first two weeks. Added to that: more than $230 million in donations involving super PACs since 2011.

The largest of those were two pro-Romney groups. American Crossroads, a Republican-leaning super PAC with ties to former President George W. Bush's longtime political counselor Karl Rove, reported raising at least $68 million through September. Restore Our Future, founded by former Romney aides, reported raising $110 million so far. Priorities USA, a pro-Obama group founded by two former aides to the president, reported raising $50 million through last month.

The $2 billion fundraising figure doesn't include nearly $130 million spent on political ads by non-profit groups that aren't required to file campaign finance reports or disclose their donors. Such so-called social welfare organizations are governed by tax laws, not election laws, although they are often affiliated with established super PACs.

Presidential candidates in 2008 raised more than $1.8 billion in inflation-adjusted figures. This time, new factors have contributed to the sharp escalation in the campaign money chase.

This year marked the first time that both major party candidates opted out from the public financing system established to set limits on how much a presidential candidate can raise and spend. Both Obama and Romney would have been eligible for about $100 million in taxpayer money to support their campaigns through the general election, but both gambled ? correctly ? that they could raise and spend far more.

In 2008, Obama became the first presidential contender to refuse all public financing while his Republican rival, Arizona Sen. John McCain, accepted the government funds. The lopsided result ? Obama outspent McCain by more than 2-to-1 in the general election ? effectively ended public funding as an option for serious candidates.

With the 2012 election so tight, both Obama and Romney have spent considerable time at high-dollar fundraising events courting wealthy donors. Romney last month lamented the time spent fundraising rather than speaking to larger groups of voters, saying "fundraising is a part of politics when your opponent decides not to live by the federal spending limits."

Both Obama and Romney have raised considerable cash from small donors, too, especially the president. His campaign reported that more than 2 million donors have contributed at least $427 million to his campaign.

Federal election regulators have raised the limit on individual contributions to candidates, which means campaigns can solicit more money from donors than they have in the past. Individual donors can now give a total of $5,000 in the primary and general elections to a candidate, compared to just $2,000 in 2000.

Michael Toner, a Republican campaign finance lawyer and former chairman of the Federal Election Commission, said the close race between Obama and Romney and the sharply polarized electorate have also played a role in accelerating the dash for dollars.

"I don't know any campaign manager who thinks they have too much money. In this political 50-50 environment you can't ever have enough," Toner said. "Every last million could make the difference in who is elected."

But the emergence of super PACs and other outside groups, unleashed partly by the Citizens United decision by the Supreme Court in 2010, has done more than anything else to reshape the contours of presidential campaign fundraising. A handful of federal court cases have broadly eased campaign finance regulations, allowing corporations and wealthy individuals to spend unlimited sums. Most of the money has been funneled to super PACs, which can raise and spend money on behalf of candidates as long as they don't coordinate expenditures or strategy with the campaign.

"The distinctive factor in this election is the outside money being spent and the corrupting money financing it," said Fred Wertheimer, a longtime campaign finance reform advocate. "It's a symbol of the disastrous campaign finance system we have and the undue influence relatively few well-financed individuals and interest groups now have over government decisions.

Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson is the top super PAC donor this year. Adelson, a billionaire, has contributed more than $40 million to Republican super PACs, including those backing Romney.

Resveratrol falls short in health benefits, study shows

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Resveratrol, an ingredient in red wine thought to improve insulin sensitivity, reduce risk of heart disease and increase longevity, does not appear to offer these benefits in healthy women, new research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis indicates.

The study, reported online Oct. 25 in Cell Metabolism, involved 29 post-menopausal women who did not have type 2 diabetes and who were reasonably healthy. For 12 weeks, half took an over-the-counter resveratrol supplement, and the rest got a placebo, or sugar pill.

"Resveratrol supplements have become popular because studies in cell systems and rodents show that resveratrol can improve metabolic function and prevent or reverse certain health problems like diabetes, heart disease and even cancer," says senior investigator Samuel Klein, MD, director of Washington University's Center for Human Nutrition. "But our data demonstrate that resveratrol supplementation does not have metabolic benefits in relatively healthy, middle-aged women."

The results were somewhat surprising because earlier studies suggested that drinking red wine lowers the risk of health problems.

"Few studies have evaluated the effects of resveratrol in people," Klein explains. "Those studies were conducted in people with diabetes, older adults with impaired glucose tolerance or obese people who had more metabolic problems than the women we studied. So it is possible that resveratrol could have beneficial effects in people who are more metabolically abnormal than the subjects who participated in the study."

Klein, the Danforth Professor of Medicine and Nutritional Science, directs the Division of Geriatrics and Nutritional Science and the Center for Applied Research Sciences. He says many people who have heard about red wine's health benefits want to take resveratrol supplements to get the benefits of red wine without consuming large amounts of alcohol. In recent years, annual U.S. sales of resveratrol supplements have risen to $30 million.

As part of the study, Klein and his colleagues gave 15 post-menopausal women 75 milligrams of resveratrol daily, the same amount they'd get from drinking 8 liters of red wine, and compared their insulin sensitivity to 14 others who took a placebo.

The team measured the women's sensitivity to insulin and the rate of glucose uptake in their muscles, infusing insulin into their bodies and measuring their metabolic response to different doses.

"It's the most sensitive approach we have for evaluating insulin action in people," he says. "And we were unable to detect any effect of resveratrol. In addition, we took small samples of muscle and fat tissue from these women to look for possible effects of resveratrol in the body's cells, and again, we could not find any changes in the signaling pathways involved in metabolism."

But if resveratrol doesn't have a health benefit, then why are red wine drinkers less likely to develop heart disease and diabetes? Klein says there may be something else in red wine that provides the benefit.

"The purpose of our study was not to identify the active ingredient in red wine that improves health but to determine whether supplementation with resveratrol has independent, metabolic effects in relatively healthy people," he says. "We were unable to detect a metabolic benefit of resveratrol supplementation in our study population, but this does not preclude the possibility that resveratrol could have a synergistic effect when combined with other compounds in red wine."

Funding for this research comes from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and grants from DSM Nutritional Products, the Longer Life Foundation, the Japanese Research Foundation for Clinical Pharmacology, the Manpei Suzuki Diabetes Foundation and the Kanae Foundation for the Promotion of Medical Science. I'm One Of Those Single Working Mothers And I Can't Take It Back

single working mothersSAHM No More explores the the ups-and-downs of navigating a new world of parenting, transitioning from married stay-at-home motherhood to a full-time working, divorced motherhood. And there are a lot of adjustments being made?a lot of adjustments and not a lot of sleep.

We are a society that loves to label. Everybody uses labels as shorthand. I know that I do. I mean, here in New York, it sometimes seems like you can tell almost everything there is to know about a person based on whether or not they live in Manhattan or Brooklyn, or whether or not they are a Mets fan or a Yankees fan. And during this 2012 election cycle, it sure seems like you can tell a whole lot about a person based on whether they are a Democrat or Republican. And while it might not seem necessary that labels double as value judgments, that is usually exactly what happens.

Sometimes that can be acceptable. I mean, if someone wants to judge me because of the political party that I associate with or the sports team I worship, so be it. These are my choices, and I will accept the positive and negative things attributed to my chosen allegiances. But lately, I?ve been confronted with labels that have been applied to women in my position?namely, single working mothers?and I?ve found that the connotations are incredibly disparaging and personally hurtful, but, even worse than that, ignorant of systemic problems.

I guess that the original trigger for me was when Mitt Romney correlated the prevalence of gun violence with single motherhood. My immediate reaction was outrage, on behalf of myself and on behalf of all the single mothers out there who do the absolute best that they can and don?t need to be told that what we?re doing is not good enough?and never will be?simply because of the fact that we are doing it alone.

The reality is that I struggle daily with things that I wouldn?t have to struggle with if I had a parenting partner who lived with me. Things like racing from work to pick up one kid from his after-school program and the other kid from his music lesson would be stress-free if I had a partner to share the burden. But I don?t.

Maybe I?d be able to make it to a PTA meeting once in awhile if I didn?t get home from work right after the meetings end. Maybe I would have the time to roast my own chicken instead of just picking up a pre-cooked rotisserie bird from the grocery store. Maybe, just maybe, I could be the perfect mom if I weren?t alone and busy all the time. But I am alone. And I am working all the time. So not only is there no way that I can be the perfect mom, I am?at least according to Mitt Romney?raising my sons to become mass murderers.

Mass murderers! Funny, really, because I always thought that I was trying to raise them to be healthy, caring, intelligent young men who will contribute to our society in a meaningful way. But maybe I should throw those plans out the window because I?m a single mom? Because it?s hopeless no matter what I do? I know that the statistics?which are really just numbers that allow us to most easily label one another?are pretty dire when it comes to the drawbacks of single motherhood. But I also know that the days where the majority of American homes are filled with perfectly traditional nuclear families like the Romneys are numbered.

Apple stock falls under $600 after holiday warning

(AP) ? Apple's stock fell below $600 on Friday for the first time in three months, after the consumer electronics behemoth warned that costs of making new products will cut into profits in the holiday quarter.

Apple's earnings for the latest quarter also missed expectations.

Apple shares were down $11.26, or 1.9 percent, to $598.28 in afternoon trading.

Late Thursday, Apple said profits for the rest of the year would fall from last year because it's launching so many new products. It's expecting mammoth sales, but new products are more expensive to make than older ones.

Apple launched the iPhone 5 a month ago and announced two new iPads and three new Macs this week. In addition, it's shipping new iPods.

Wall Street analysts took the adjustment in stride, knowing that Apple nearly always lowballs its estimates, but several cut their earnings estimates for the fiscal year that started this month. Stuart Jeffrey noted that Apple's profit margins should be back to normal in the quarter that starts in April, but that will be too late to fully make up for the earnings hit in the holiday quarter. He cut his earnings estimate for the year by 10 percent and his price target on the shares from $710 to $660.

Apple shares have now lost more than $100 from their all-time peak of $705.07, hit on Sept. 21, the day the iPhone went on sale in the U.S. and eight other countries. That's a total loss to investors of $106 billion. Apple remains the most valuable public company in the world, by a wide margin, with a total market capitalization of $556 billion.

Apple's stock last fell below $600 following an earnings report as well. It missed expectations in the previous quarter, too, something rare for Apple.

The Cupertino, Calif., company started taking orders for the iPad Mini on Friday. The new, smaller version of the iPad tablet starts at $329. Initial shipments of the white model quickly sold out on Apple's site; buyers will now have to wait two weeks for delivery. The black model was still available Friday afternoon for a one-week delivery.

Strategy Analytics claims Android is up to 41 percent of tablets in Q3, iPad may feel the heat

Three months can make all the difference, at least if you're drafting estimates at Strategy Analytics. Now that we know 14 million iPads shipped in the third quarter, the analyst group believes that Apple's tablet market share dropped from 68.3 percent in the spring to 56.7 percent in the summer. All of the shift is attributed to Android -- researchers think that shipments of Google-based tablets surged from 7.3 million to 10.2 million, handing the platform 41 percent of an increasingly crowded space. It's the "collective weight" of so many Android-reliant companies leaping into the market rather than any one of them pulling ahead, Strategy Analytics says. We wouldn't be shocked if a few Kindle Fire HD sales played a part.

More than a few wildcards still surround the figures and their long-term impact. First is that these are estimates, not concrete results: companies like Amazon steadfastly refuse to provide shipment numbers and leave most of the final tally beyond Apple to educated guesswork. It's also an understatement to say that the market will change dramatically before 2012 is over. Between Windows 8's launch, possible Nexus 7 upgrades and two new iPads, there are a lot of pieces moving on the chessboard.

NY Times public editor calls into question incoming CEO Thompson

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Times public editor has questioned whether the newspaper's incoming chief executive, the former BBC head Mark Thompson, is fit to serve as the company's top official as a scandal shakes Britain's most prestigious broadcaster.

One Wall Street analyst called for the New York Times Co to delay Thompson taking over the company, adding more pressure on executives to address the matter on the company's earnings conference call on Thursday.

The BBC has been damaged by the scandal involving one of its most famous entertainers, the late Jimmy Savile, who is accused of sexually abusing hundreds of women and girls over the course of six decades. Savile, the eccentric host of the "Top of the Pops" music show, died last year at the age of 84.

Thompson held the top job as director general at the BBC from 2004 until September and also held the title of editor-in-chief, according to a description of the Director General's duties on the BBC website.

"How likely is it that (Thompson) knew nothing?" New York Times public editor Margaret Sullivan wrote in a blog post on Tuesday.

"His integrity and decision-making are bound to affect The Times and its journalism -- profoundly. It's worth considering now whether he is the right person for the job, given this turn of events."

A New York Times spokesman declined to comment.

No evidence has emerged in police and parliamentary investigations that shows Thompson knew about the decision to pull the Newsnight program or about Savile's alleged behaviour.

Thompson did not respond immediately to an email seeking comment about the public editor's column.

The allegations enveloping the British broadcaster hinge partly on the BBC's decision last year to shelve a show at its flagship "Newsnight" program investigating Savile. Rival broadcaster ITV aired a bombshell report this month about Savile and the claims against him, which were rumoured for years.

Last week, Thompson said in a statement, "I was not notified or briefed about the Newsnight investigation, nor was I involved in any way in the decision not to complete and air the investigation.

In her post, Sullivan commended the paper for "reporting this story regularly".

As public editor and a representative of readers, Sullivan writes about issues affecting the newspaper independent from News York Times management, including chairman and publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. and executive editor Jill Abramson.

Since stepping into the role in September, she has already made waves including a post that criticized the paper's decision not to publish on the front page a story about a congressional hearing into attacks on a U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, last month in which four Americans were killed.

A representative from Sullivan's office said she declined to comment further on her blog about Thompson. An email sent to Sulzberger seeking comment was not returned immediately.

Sullivan's post on Thompson follows New York Times former executive editor Bill Keller, who wrote a column last week drawing a parallel between Savile and Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky, who was recently sentenced to what amounts to life imprisonment for molesting children.

The New York Times tapped Thompson in August as CEO -- a role that had been vacant eight months after the company ousted its former CEO Janet Robinson last year.

Thompson is expected to start with the Times on November 12.

The unfolding Savile scandal has also caught the attention of some analysts in the United States.

"The New York Times should delay (Thompson's) start date until there is more clarity," said Doug Arthur, an analyst with Evercore Partners who follows the New York Times.

"It seems to me he will have to attend a hearing in the UK parliament. That is going to be a distraction. It's unfortunate. It's an unexpected complication."

In a hearing with British lawmakers on Tuesday, BBC Director General George Entwistle denied that the BBC helped cover up allegations that Savile preyed on women.

Thompson said the Newsnight investigation was mentioned to him by a journalist at a party last year, but he was later told it was not going ahead for journalistic reasons.

"I was never formally notified about the Newsnight investigation and was not briefed about the allegations they were examining and to what extent, if at all, those allegations related to Savile's work at the BBC," he said in a letter to a British lawmaker on Tuesday.

Thompson added he would be happy to appear in front of the parliamentary committee or any other inquiry in future.

Newsnight's editor, Peter Rippon, stepped aside on Monday after the BBC said his explanation for shelving the story had been "inaccurate or incomplete.

As Baby Boomers Age in Place, They Will Increase Their Influence ...

Over the coming decade, the home improvement market will increasingly rely on older homeowners to generate growth. A?previous post?pointed out that baby boomers will continue to control a large segment of the housing stock nationally, that they have low mobility rates, and that they have continued to improve their homes as they prepare to age in place. Going forward, baby boomers have significant motivation to spend on home improvements. They also have the financial resources to do so. By staying in the workforce longer, baby boomers often have sufficient incomes to undertake these improvements. Moreover, because older households were able to benefit from the run-up in stock prices and home values more than younger households, they typically have seen greater gains in wealth. The net result is that home improvement expenditures by older owners have grown faster than for younger ones.

As their longevity has increased, coupled with their uncertainty over future economic conditions, seniors have been more inclined than comparable groups in prior decades to remain in the labor force. The labor force participation rate (the share of the population that is working or actively looking for work) for the age 55 plus population increased from 30.1% in 1990 to 40.2% in 2010 according to the U.S. Department of Labor. They project that it will continue to inch up for this group in coming years.

While incomes for older workers have held up better than those of their younger counterparts, the biggest difference has been in the wealth positions of these households. Older families, who were able to benefit from both the run-up in stock prices and home values, are generally in a much better financial position now than their younger counterparts. Between 1995 ? when both the stock market and housing market began to accelerate ? and 2010, median family net worth increased by almost 34%. However, it increased significantly more for older households, with families age 75 and older having a net worth 133% greater than their counterparts in 1995.

Source: Federal Reserve Board, Survey of Consumer Finances

Not only was the upside greater for older families over this period, but the recent downturn has been significantly milder. While median family net worth declined over 35% from 2007 ? when both stock prices and home values were near their market peak ? to 2010, it declined less than 30% for those aged 55 to 64, and even increased modestly for families aged 75+.

Though families aged 55 to 64, the leading edge of the baby boom generation and therefore a key demographic to watch, haven?t done as well as older families in recent years in holding onto their net worth, their situation still looks promising. Typically more highly leveraged during the growth years, this leverage often worked against the leading edge baby boomers during the downturn. Still, by 2010, the median net worth of this group had increased more than 55% from 1995 levels, compared to 34% for all families.?Coupled with incomes that have held up better than their younger counterparts since 1995, this leading edge of the baby boom generation is entering its retirement years in a generally comfortable financial position.

Greater longevity and lower mobility have given older households the incentive to improve and modify their homes so that they are able to comfortably and safely age in place. Higher incomes and greater wealth have given them the ability to do so. Average spending by homeowners on home improvement projects has increased about 30% over the past decade. However, while gains have been more modest for owners under age 55, they have increased by over 50% for those over age 55.

Source: JCHS Tabulations of the 2001 and 2011 American Housing Surveys

The combination of greater numbers of baby boomers aging in place and greater per owner spending on home improvement projects has dramatically shifted the composition of the home improvement market. In 2001, owners age 55 or older accounted for less than 32% of home improvement spending in the owner-occupied residential market. By 2011, this had grown to 45%. So, while the influence of baby boomers on the new residential construction market may be waning, they are a growing force in home improvement activity.

Vibease: Long-Distance Dating App And 'Messager' That Offers ...

Remember that time you really wanted to "get it on," but your partner was thousands of miles away? Well, there's an app for that.

A startup called Vibease recently started taking pre-orders for a new long-distance vibrator operated by bluetooth technology. The full bundle includes the free Vibease app (only for Android at the time of publication, with an iOS version expected soon), as well as what the company calls a "massager," available in both pink and purple for the early bird special of $69.99.

So how do users reach that climactic moment when absence isn't making the heart grow any fonder?

By connecting the vibrator through bluetooth, women's partners are able to control the type of massage received through a series of functions on their smartphone. Women can also fly solo, creating their "own sexy moments" with ambient sounds and personalized vibration patterns, as seen on the Vibease's website. The app also allows couples to chat, send pics or (let's call it what it is) sext through a secure messaging service that requires a security pin for access.

"The idea started when I was in Boston, and my wife was in Singapore," said co-founder and CEO Dema Tio in the one of company's promotional videos. "Although we were connected through Skype, we were missing our intimate moment."

This isn't the first piece of technology to enter the long-distance dating scene. Apps like Pair, Avocado and Pocket Kamasutra are geared toward couples who rely on the mobile world to stay in touch, while "internet-connected pleasure machine" LovePalz is a device meant to simulate full on coitus. Vibease fits neatly into this digital space, since it's more than an app but slightly less expensive than WiFi sex toys like LovePalz.

Of course, Vibease is aimed at giving women pleasure. So what's a man to do? Well? we're sure you'll figure something out.

What are your thoughts on mobile technology that keeps couples intimate from afar? Would you ever use a service like Vibease? Sound off in the comments section below, or tweet us at [@HuffPostTech]. Then read through our list of apps for long-distance couples (here), or check out more information on the LovePalz gadget for parted partners (here).
