Rescue Spotlight: Sheltering Hands, Florida | YDV's Sanctuary ...

The moment when a homeless furry finds his forever home has to be one of the most precious I have been able to take part in. Patches, a kitten fostered by Ocala-based Sheltering Hands, Inc. was one of the cats I had the pleasure of meeting on my first day volunteering with the cat rescue. He found his forever home on the same day. Sheltering Hands, Inc. is 100% volunteer funded and operated. Although they do not have a shelter of their own, they have been fortunate to place cats in new homes from within the Ocala PetSmart?s adoption center room.

Patches finds a home thanks to Sheltering Hands.

Speaking with the volunteer coordinator, I could not help but be impressed and admire the dedication of the volunteers that make up Sheltering Hands. Some volunteers house over 50 cats waiting for a forever home, including cats that may never find a new home because of illnesses, which means they require special treatment. Their programs involve rescue of stray and homeless cats and in some cases are able to provide support to cats whose guardians have passed or where urgent re-homing is needed. Their network of foster homes means that the cats (and sometimes) dogs in their care get to socialize and find comfort as they await to become adopted. Some of the cats are placed at the adoption center in PetSmart and many more listed on their Pet Finder page, Sheltering Hands. Those wishing to adopt from Sheltering Hands first have to submit an application and agree to a home visit to ensure that the cat being adopted will match the family as much as possible. With each adoption, each cat will be microchipped, spayed/neutered, and given Fvrcp, Rabies, and leukemia vaccines.

Waiting for a forever home.

Sheltering Hands acknowledges that older cats are among the most difficult to get adopted, and being in Florida means that many of the people interested in adoption are the elderly. Because of this, they have developed the Seniors for Seniors Program, where senior citizens over 60 years of age are able to foster an adult-aged cat. The program ensures that the cat will be cared for if at any moment the senior becomes available and provides for the cats needs while allowing a safe and loving home for the cat.

Lastly, the organization provides spay/neuter assistance programs and supports a Trap-Neuter-Return Program for feral and stray cat in Levy and Marion counties (Florida).? Sheltering Hands also provides responsible pet care education programs.

You can support this organization through donations, fostering, providing supplies they may need, sponsoring a resident cat, or becoming a member.? You can also volunteer a few hours per week (or more) as I am doing during my holiday time in Florida.
