Former President of Mexico Dies

MEXICO CITY?Former Mexican president Miguel de la Madrid, who inherited a virtually bankrupt country and forced Mexico's closed economy to open to the outside world, died on Sunday at age 77.

President Felipe Calder?n's office confirmed the death, which was attributed to lung disease. Mr. de la Madrid was a longtime smoker and had been hospitalized with emphysema for months.
