MANCHESTER ??

The Community Choir of Manchester will perform Jan. 20 to raise money for a wounded U.S. Marine from Ellington.

The benefit concert for Greg Caron is slated for 7:30 p.m. at South United Methodist Church, 1226 Main St., Manchester. Admission is free, but donations will go the Greg Caron Fund, according to a news release.

Caron, a soccer and basketball player who graduated from Ellington High School in 2004, lost the lower part of both legs and a finger in an IED explosion in Afghanistan on Nov. 12. The 25-year-old is being treated at Walter Reed Hospital in Maryland, according to a recent story in The Courant.

"We are really hoping to fill South Methodist for this worthy cause and put a major dent in the financial needs of Greg's family," choir Director Cheryl Hilton wrote in an email Tuesday.

Hilton, who is also director of music at Illing Middle School, wrote that the group was formed about 12 years ago when she was a teacher at what is now Bennet Academy. Choir members include students, former students, teachers and citizens, and membership is typically 20-25 singers, Hilton wrote.
