Forest Grove legal assistant pleads guilty to aggravated identity theft ...

The legal assistant at Robert Browning's Forest Grove law firm pleaded guilty Thursday in Washington County Circuit Court to first-degree theft and aggravated identity theft.

Amy Jeanine Moore, 41, used the credit card of a deceased woman to pay for dog-kennel boarding and travel expenses on a trip to Hawaii, said prosecutor Jason Weiner.

Moore gained access to the credit card at work, Weiner said, where Browning was handling the cardholder's estate.

One of Browning's responsibilities, Weiner said, was to close the victim's credit card account.

Authorities learned of Moore's criminal activity during their investigation of Browning, said Capt. Mike Herb, a Forest Grove Police Department spokesman.

In a separate case, which police say involves the elder abuse of his mother-in-law, Browning has been indicted on seven counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment.

Browning attended Moore's plea hearing before Judge Thomas Kohl.

He told Kohl, "Notice was given to Chase to close the card. Why an additional card was sent out, I can't explain."

Once he was made aware of the charges on the credit card, Browning said, the card was paid off in about four hours.

He added that he believed the charges against Moore "wouldn't be so onerous" if the state weren't prosecuting him, too.

Kohl sentenced Moore to two years of probation and 200 hours of community service.

Browning is scheduled to go to trial in March 2012.
