Not very long ago, Dr. V over at Pawcurious blog talked about a new revolutionary pet tracker device that essentially is a GPS system that fits on your pet?s collar. Tonight, I had the pleasure of seeing one of these devices myself and they truly are fantastic.
Essentially, the Tagg Pet Tracker works like a Lojack system but for your pet instead of your car. The device is small and light-weight (much more so than other products currently available on the market.) It fits easily on your pet?s collar and sends you a text or email notification if your pet leaves the area which you designate as the zone he should be confined to. In the event that your pet does escape your house or yard, the Tagg Pet Tracker will lead you directly to him.
The following video will show you how the Tagg Pet Tracker works. It differs from a microchip. A microchip must be scanned by a facility which utilizes a device that can read the microchip. This means that your pet must end up at a veterinary hospital, shelter, rescue, pound or other facility with a scanner before he can be returned to you. It also differs from an ID tag which requires that someone finds your pet and contacts you. The Tagg Pet Tracker notifies you if you pet has ?gone missing? and will tell you exactly where he is. You also have the option of having other parties notified that your pet has left the premises just in case you?re not available. There?s also an ?off? switch, so the system won?t activate when you take your pet out for a walk.
For more information, see Dr. V?s blog or watch the video. I think this is a pretty exciting new technology that can benefit many pets and pet owners. The only drawback that I can see is that, even though it works on both dogs and cats, your pet must be over 10 lbs. in order to wear it.
