Aarthy Ramamurthy's New Startup - Business Insider

We just found out that True&Co cofounder Aarthi Ramamurthy is working on a cool new startup for photography buffs.

If she's successful, and there's every reason to believe she will, it could lead to a whole new way to buy stuff over the Internet.

Ramamurthy came into the public's eye about a year ago, when True&Co burst onto the scene. It's an online lingerie store that uses algorithms to guarantee a bra will fit perfectly.

That's a big improvement over the classic bra fitting, which involves a socially uncomfortable situation with a saleswoman and a tape measure.

But a few months ago Ramamurthy split from the company, leaving it in the hands of cofounder Michelle Lam.

"We finished a year and our visions were different for where we wanted to take the company," Lam told Business Insider. So Ramamurthy stepped out, keeping her financial stake.

Ramamurthy wasn't worried about her future when she left. She's exactly the kind of engineering talent who prospers in the Valley. She spent six years at Microsoft, working on its popular Visual Studio software development tool and on Xbox Live. She was poached by Netflix, helping it develop its streaming 3D content service.

Even a little app that she and her husband, Sriram Krishnan, wrote on their honeymoon has been successful.? He's an ex-Microsoftie, too, and yes, they spent their honeymoon in Hawaii coding together. BubbleGum has become a top Windows Phone 7 app for taking and sharing photos.

BubbleGum has partially inspired the startup she's working on now. It's an e-commerce site to help teach amateur photographers how to take better pictures. (Ramamurthy is an amateur photographer herself.)

Her site will use a recommendation engine, similar to the ones she wrote for bras and movies, to help photographers determine what equipment they need and then help them try before they buy.

She's so early that the startup doesn't have a name yet. But there's still reason to believe she'll have another hit. She's got the backing of Battery Ventures, where she's an entrepreneur-in-residence, and one of her advisors is Cisco?bigwig Padmasree Warrior, the company's?chief strategy officer.

We promised not to spill more beans than that, but if this recommend/try/buy thing works, it could be a model for others.

Marco Rubio Is Taking a Spring Trip to Israel (Sound Familiar?)

ROTTERDAM (Reuters) - Defending champion Roger Federer suffered a shock 6-3 7-5 defeat by Frenchman Julien Benneteau, who has yet to lift a tour title during his 13-year career, in the World Indoor Tournament quarter-finals on Friday. Clean-up team to meteorite-hit Urals

The BBC's Daniel Sandford says people described a ball of fire in the sky

A 20,000-strong team has been sent to the Ural mountains as part of a rescue and clean-up operation after Friday's meteor strike, Russia's emergency, ministry says.

President Vladimir Putin ordered the operation to help some 1,200 people who were injured, including 200 children, mostly by shattered glass.

The shockwave blew out windows and rocked buildings around Chelyabinsk.

A fireball streaked through the clear morning sky, followed by loud bangs.

A large meteorite landed in a lake near Chebarkul, a town in Chelyabinsk region, and Friday morning's dramatic passage was witnessed hundreds of kilometres away.

End Quote Sergei Serskov Chelyabinsk resident

Mr Putin said he thanked God that no big fragments of the 10-tonne meteor - which was thought to be made of iron and travelling at some 30 km (19 miles) per second - had fallen in populated areas.

It had entered the Earth's atmosphere and broke apart 30-50 km (20-30 miles) above ground, according to Russia's Academy of Sciences, releasing several kilotonnes of energy - the equivalent of a small atomic weapon.

The Emergencies Ministry urged calm, saying background radiation levels were normal after what it described as a "meteorite shower in the form of fireballs".

"The explosion was so strong that some windows in our building and in the buildings that are across the road and in the city in general, the windows broke," Chelyabinsk resident Polina Zolotarevskaya told BBC News.

The Chelyabinsk region, about 1,500km east of Moscow, is home to many factories, a nuclear power plant and the Mayak atomic waste storage and treatment centre.

Asteroids, meteors and meteorites

  • Asteroids are small bodies that orbit the Sun as the Earth does
  • Larger asteroids are called planetoids or minor planets, smaller ones often called meteoroids
  • Once any of these enters our planet's atmosphere, it becomes a meteor
  • Many meteors break into pieces or burn up entirely as they speed through the atmosphere
  • Once meteors or fragments actually hits the earth, they become meteorites

Many children were at lessons when the meteor fell at around 09:20 (03:20 GMT).

Video posted online showed frightened, screaming youngsters at one Chelyabinsk school, where corridors were littered with broken glass.

Chelyabinsk resident Sergei Serskov told BBC News the city had felt like a "war zone" for 20 to 30 minutes.

"I was in the office when suddenly I saw a really bright flash in the window in front of me," he said.

Footage shows an icy lake near Chebarkul, where police say part of the meteor landed

"Then I smelt fumes. I looked out the window and saw a huge line of smoke, like you get from a plane but many times bigger."

"A few minutes later the window suddenly came open and there was a huge explosion, followed by lots of little explosions."

Debris also reportedly fell on the west Siberian region of Tyumen.

Governor Yurevich reported that a meteorite had landed in a lake 1km outside Chebarkul, which has a population of 46,000.

A Russian army spokesman said a crater 6m (20ft) wide had been found on the shore of the lake.

Scientists have played down suggestions that there is any link between the event in the Urals and 2012 DA14, an asteroid which raced past the Earth later on Friday at a distance of just 27,700km (17,200 miles) - the closest ever for an object of that size.

Such meteor strikes are rare in Russia but one is thought to have devastated an area of more than 2,000 sq km (770 sq m) in Siberia in 1908.

Job Posting Confirms Microsoft Blue Windows Upgrade Program

For those not familiar with the term Microsoft Blue, it is Microsoft?s upcoming OS upgrade program that will bring low-cost yearly updates to it?s desktop, mobile operating system, and?the Windows Services (like SkyDrive, Hotmail, etc). Blue focuses on product teams to focus on incremental yearly upgrades to the platforms instead of two-to-three yearly bigger upgrades. Microsoft Blue was scheduled to be released later this year, but a recent job posting by Microsoft is the first real sign that the Blue?initiative?is beginning to gain momentum.

We?re looking for an excellent, experienced SDET to join the Core Experience team in Windows Sustained Engineering (WinSE). The Core Experience features are the centerpiece of the new Windows UI, representing most of what customers touch and see in the OS, including: the start screen; application lifecycle; windowing; and personalization.?Windows Blue promises to build and improve upon these aspects of the OS, enhancing ease of use and the overall user experience on devices and PCs worldwide.

The wording of the job advert seems to suggest that Blue will focus mostly on the Windows UI around how customers experience and interact with the touch interface in the OS, as opposed to the familiar under-the-hood improvements we?re used to seeing with updates.

Microsoft Job Posting Confirms Microsoft Blue Windows Upgrade ProgramA further job posting for a Senior Development Lead reveals that Blue will be released on Windows Phone:

As a development lead you will hire and manage a team of top-notch developers, be personally involved in designing and coding features, and work closely with PM and Test counterparts across multiple orgs to help realize the vision of building high quality excel app for Windows Phone Blue.

Hopefully the introduction of Microsoft Blue will pave the way for regular incremental updates that benefit the user experience, optimising features customers have fed back to Microsoft, ultimately improving their product across the desktop and mobile platforms.

But what do you think, do you think Blue will make that much difference?

Nostalgia: ?It can be quite lonely as a church organist?

RETIRED electrical engineer Charles Napier shares his memories of being an organist at ?St Peter?s RC church in Morningside for more than 45 years.

RETIRED electrical engineer Charles Napier shares his memories of being an organist at St Peter?s RC church in Morningside for more than 45 years.

Mr Napier, 80, took the job as a temporary appointment to help out the priest at the time, but enjoyed it so much he ended up keeping the post for decades and has worked alongside four different priests over the years.

Mr Napier said one of the biggest changes he witnessed during his time there was the drop in the number of services taking place each Sunday.

He said: ?Back in the 60s and 70s, there were three services on a Sunday at St Peter?s, but now there is only one.

?This is mainly down to a shortage of priests.

?Priests are having to share churches nowadays and one priest has to do at least two churches which means they can?t have the same number of services.?

Although being an organist can be a solitary job at times, Mr Napier said he has enjoyed seeing the congregation grow and change over the years.

He said: ?One thing that?s noticeable is that there are cycles.

?You have periods where the congregation increases where there?s lots of young people and then they grow up and move away.

?You do get situations where they come back and get married in the church, which is lovely.

?Being the organist, one tends not to meet the congregation too much because we are there before they arrive and then we leave after they have gone.

?It can be quite a lonely job in many ways, but I enjoyed it, otherwise I wouldn?t have done it for so long.?
