'Chronicle' Rooted In 'Complete Reality,' Stars Say

'It's a movie about what would actually happen if teenagers got superpowers,' Dane DeHaan tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner

In the buzzworthy action/drama hybrid "Chronicle," out Friday, three friends' lives are forever changed when they encounter an otherworldly substance and structure that somehow gives them extraordinary abilities.

The movie is shot mostly via the "found footage" or "POV" format and revolves around high school students Andrew (Dane DeHaan), Matt (Alex Russell) and Steve (Michael B. Jordan). When MTV News caught up with the three stars of the film recently, we asked them to explain how "Chronicle" is different from every other superpower and found-footage film out there.

"It's a movie about what would actually happen if teenagers got superpowers," DeHaan said. "And I think that, for the first time, it deals with that issue in modern day in complete reality, which is the person who gets the superpowers probably won't be the best person in the world and only want to save other people in the world from their problems."

"From the beginning, you're invested in Andrew and Steve and Matt," Jordan added. "It's not just, 'What monster is going to be popping out of this building?' You really follow the characters throughout the movie and care what happens to them."

Because the audience spends so much time getting to know the three main characters, Russell said it makes for an especially intense thrill ride when the boys discover just how powerful they are and things start to spiral out of control.

"It's action-packed, it's incredible in that way, but it in no way relies on that," Russell said of the film's impressive effects and aerial stunt work. "The characters are very layered, the relationships are complex and beautiful, and something you get really invested in it, and I think that makes it hit home so much harder when things start to go awry."

Check out everything we've got on "Chronicle."

Spider Parting Gift Makes Him Sterile Father

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

Male orb web spiders will detach their sex organs and leave them in the female to become a father without becoming dinner. Katherine Harmon reports.

More 60-Second Science

To a female orb web spider, a suitable male can look like a mate?and a meal. For these spiders, the dating game has turned into a deadly dance of evolutionary one-upsmanship.

The female spider can choose when to cut off intimate relations by eating her partner, or kicking him out. This dynamic has led males to an unlikely strategy to make sure they have some say in the matter: self-castration.

Males are able to leave part or all of their organ inside of a female, which decreases the odds the female will be able to mate again. But new research shows that when a male leaves his whole kit-and-caboodle behind, his likelihood of fathering the next batch of eggs is much higher. Why? His parting gift keeps on giving, even after he is gone.

This remote-copulation technique actually boosts the amount and speed of sperm transferred to the female. The behavior is described in the journal Biology Letters. [Daiqin Li et al, Remote Copulation: male adaptation to cannibalism, link to come]

So for these unlucky fellas, it is better to have loved?and lost.

Dazayna Drayton, Daughter of Flavor Flav, Arrested For Attack on Rapper

Flavor Flav says his daughter, Dazayna Drayton, is getting a bad rap after her arrest this weekend, claiming she didn't lay a hand on him ... which she is accused of.

The whole thing was just a family dispute that got out of hand, Flav says.

Flav claims he tried to stop the cops from arresting Dazayna, but Nevada's zero tolerance law requires police to book anyone who allegedly strikes a family member.

"The whole thing was a big misunderstanding that shouldn't have happened," he says. "No one in my family called the cops on my daughter; she did not beat me up."

Flavor Flav Time

Flav, whose word must be taken with a grain of salt, as he is insane, makes it clear, "I love my daughter and will never let anything happen that could come between us."

Dazayna Drayton was booked for misdemeanor battery Sunday.

It's unclear who called the cops, but someone did after Flav's 19-year-old girl got into an argument with one his stepsons, which eventually became physical.

Flav tried to break it up and got hit by his daughter for his troubles - either on purpose or by accident (he's clearly saying the latter) - and authorities found enough evidence of domestic violence to take her into custody afterward.

'Cake Boss: Next Great Baker' Finale: And The Winner Is... (VIDEO)

After a long competition, only two remained on the season finale of "Next Great Baker" (Mon., 9 p.m. EST on TLC). It was a night of celebration with the winner being crowned, but TLC also took some time out before the finale to air a retrospective of the season. While it was light in parts, the cast did address the suicide of contestant Wesley Durden after filming of the season had wrapped.

The night began with three bakers still in the running. It was between Ryan Cimorelli, Marrisa Lopez and Nadine Reibeling. With $100,000 on the line, as well as a job working with the "Cake Boss" himself, Buddy Valastro, the girls got off to a quick start -- literally, as the first challenge had them racing to crack eggs the fastest. Marrisa won this one.

The next challenge had them baking items to sell at Buddy's bakery. Once again, Ryan struggled to match the women in quantity and while he did sell out quickly, he just didn't have enough product to stay competitive. So it was Nadine, who won that challenge, taking on Marrisa in the final challenge.

For the win, they had to create a 4-foot tall cake that represented the American Dream. Both went with a dreamlike story of their own journeys, and it looked like it was going to be a close competition to the end. Appropriate, as the women had become close friends as well. But in the end, it was Marrisa Lopez who won it all.

"I would have loved for her to win as well and I wish we could split it," Marrisa said. "But there can only be one and I'm just so happy it's me."

If you are a people-pleaser who strives to keep your social relationships smooth and comfortable, you might find yourself overeating in certain social situations like Super Bowl watch parties. A new study from Case Western Reserve University found that, hungry or not, some people eat in an attempt to keep others comfortable.

"They don't want to rock the boat or upset the sense of social harmony," says Julie Exline, a Case Western Reserve psychologist and lead author of the study.

Turning down cake or cookies when others are indulging is tough for everyone, but it poses a special problem for people-pleasers, Exline says. If people-pleasers feel a sense of social pressure to eat, they will often eat more in an attempt to match what others around them are eating.

But even if people-pleasers overeat in order to keep others comfortable, they may pay an emotional price.

"Those who overeat in order to please others tend to regret their choices later. It doesn't feel good to give in to social pressures," Exline says.

The research findings were reported in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology article, "People-Pleasing through Eating: Sociotropy Presents Greater Eating in Response to Perceived Social Pressure."

This study looked at the eating habits, but, Exline says, the same behaviors that affect food consumption can surface in other areas of the individual's life. For example, people-pleasers may feel anxious or guilty if they outperform others in areas such as academics, athletics or relationship success. People-pleasers have a strong desire to avoid posing a threat to others, so they often put a lot of energy into trying to keep others comfortable.

Exline led a two-part study of 101 college students (41 men and 60 women) who completed a questionnaire that assessed characteristics for people-pleasing, also known as "sociotropy." Students high in people-pleasing were those who tended to put others' needs before their own, worried about hurting others, and were sensitive to criticism, among other behaviors.

After answering these questions along with some other background measures, students were seated with a female actor who was posing as a second participant in the study. The experimenter handed a bowl of M&M candies to the actor, who took a small handful of candies (about 5) before offering the bowl to the participant. After taking the candies, participants reported how many they took and why. Researchers also assessed the number of candies taken.

High sociotropy (people-pleasing) scores were associated with taking more candy, both in this laboratory experiment and in a second study involving recall of real-life eating situations.

"People-pleasers feel more intense pressure to eat when they believe that their eating will help another person feel more comfortable," Exline says. "Almost everyone has been in a situation in which they've felt this pressure, but people-pleasers seem especially sensitive to it."

Also contributing to the study are Ellen Bratslavsky, Cuyahoga Community College; Michelle Hamilton, Case Western Reserve University; Anne Swenson, University of Washington; and Anne L. Zell, Augustana College.
